It’s been a big year for Parmigiani Fleurier, what with its runaway successes of the Chronographe Mystérieux and its trio of 30th anniversary Torics at Watches & Wonders in April. Now, ahead of the next fair season at Geneva Watch Days which kicks off later this week, the maison is bringing back a heavy hitter from 2022 that aims to please.

The Parmigiani Tonda PF Skeleton was first released in 2022, alongside the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante and the Flying Tourbillon as the second wave of what we like to call CEO Guido Terreni’s quiet luxury revolution. It debuted with two references — a stainless example with platinum 950 bezel, and a full 18K rose gold iteration — backed by a brand new automatic openworked Caliber PF777.

With its openworked dial and sapphire caseback, the Tonda PF Skeleton offers a welcome insight to the innerworkings of the Tonda PF. Only the chapter ring is retained to ensure ease of reading the time. The dial plate, meanwhile, is a considered latticework of flowing spaces framed against carefully sculpted bridges, alternately sandblasted and satin-finished with vertical brushing. Edges are beveled, with mirror-polished chamfers for added depth. At places, the light shoots through the dial, past the caliber to the sapphire glass on the other side. Along the way, it turns the spotlight on the meticulous craft and finishing wrought by hand throughout.

This year’s iteration brings back the Milano blue of 2024, then paired with a platinum case. Here, the deep intense blue on the bridges, rendered via atomic layer deposition (ALD) to preserve the sculpted contours, is paired with the soft, warm blush of rose gold. Depending on the ambient light and angle, the blue shifts from radiant to brooding.

Beneath the bridges, the gear train, barrel and escapement are rhodium-plated with matching screws for a stealthy contrast. The hand-applied 18K rose gold indexes and skeletonized rose gold delta hands, in comparison, stand out in sharp relief. The overall impression is certainly flashier and more glamorous than the original references that paired gray graphite bridges with stainless steel or rose gold, and the earlier Milano blue and platinum combination, but it remains well in keeping with the Tonda PF aesthetics of understated luxury.

The Parmigiani logo sits at twelve o’clock, just above one of the two open-worked barrels arranged in series. They power the 4Hz movement, feeding it with consistent torque to ensure a healthy power reserve of 60 hours. As in its predecessors, the open-worked design offers a glimpse of the mainsprings as they contract and relax, visible from both the dial and the back.

The caliber itself is showcased via the sapphire caseback. The 18K rose gold rotor is skeletonized and variously polished and brushed for contrast, taking center stage along with the PF logo at its heart. As with the front of the watch, the hand finishing is fully showcased here as well.

Elsewhere, the PF Skeleton bears all the hallmarks of the PF family: supple integrated bracelet with signature sculpted lugs, a winning combination of brushed and polished links, and the hand-knurled bezel with fine fluting. And as befits the family’s integrated sports watch status, water resistance is a healthy 100m.
