Designing Perfection at Parmigiani Fleurier

Share

Parmigiani has found such success with its Tonda PF introduced last September that this model is anchoring the design language of the company’s 2022 novelties. Its objective is to distill the very essence of the spirit of independent, authentic watchmaking that translates into timepieces characterized by “unostentatious high horology”. The respect for the golden ratio in dial design, knurled bezel, optimal volume and the way the lugs sweep almost imperceptibly from case to bracelet, are some hallmarks of Parmigiani’s aesthetics penned into the following novelties.

Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante

Not to be confused with spilt seconds chronographs, the two hands that spilt and “catch up” in this case are the duo of hour hands, stacked one above the other in an innovative and intuitive execution of the dual time zone complication. When the pusher at eight o’clock is pressed, the upper rhodium-plated gold hour hand advances by one hour to accordingly reflect local time, while the rose gold hour hand below remains stationary, to reflect home time. Once the GMT function is no longer required, pressing the rose gold button integrated into the crown serves to merge the two hands again.

A clever way to keep the dial uncluttered, this is executed in “Milano Blue” with exquisite barleycorn guilloché and housed in a polished and satin-finished stainless steel case with knurled platinum bezel. Turning the watch over reveals a beautifully decorated automatic movement wound by a micro-rotor, with a power reserve of 48 hours.

Tonda PF Skeleton

Two references are offered for this, in rose gold case, or steel/platinum case. Here the PF777 has been skeletonized to reveal the workings of the movement to optimal effect. Much of the dial has been excised, leaving the chapter ring to bear the hour markers, against a backdrop of the mechanics largely in graphite tone.

Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon

There is some play at irony here, with Parmigiani building an aesthetically simple and monochromatic watch around that most eye-catching of mechanical complications, the flying tourbillon. While discreet, the Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon is nevertheless luxurious, clad in sandblasted platinum case and dial, with platinum bracelet, and it is also wound by a platinum micro-rotor.

A most impressive statement of minimalist refinement, the Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon is built to go where few tourbillons think to venture, to a water resistance of 100 meters. Accordingly, it comes in a very respectful limited edition of just 25 pieces.

Tonda GT Chronograph

Two versions are offered for the sports star of this lineup: the Tonda GT Chronograph in rose gold case is mated with large date display, while the steel version has the annual calendar function. Both are very practical and easy on the eye, which means that picking one or the other will not be the easiest thing to do.

Rose gold version with large date features a 5Hz chronometer movement

The rose gold version with large date features an integrated self-winding chronograph blazing away at 5Hz, allowing it to track elapsed time to an accuracy of a 10th of a second. It is also a COSC-certified chronometer with column wheel and a power reserve of 65 hours, and comes paired with red or gray rubber strap to match the color of the subdials.

The steel version with annual calendar is fitted with a self-winding chronograph running at a slower 4Hz rate. But the convenience of an annual calendar is a powerful draw; the watch will automatically account for the alternating 30/31 duration of the months, requiring manual adjustment only for February.

Both versions feature triangular hobnail guilloché dials and are water resistant to 100 meters.
