Every so often a watch arrives that people simply want to own. Before they’ve discussed the movement, argued over the price or compared it to a previous model, they’ve already decided they like it. For me, the latest TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Team Ikuzawa had won that argument from the very first press release images.

With this watch, the question isn’t whether it’s cool, but why. It makes an immediate impression with its crisp white dial, deliberate flashes of red, and a retro toolbox presentation. But the appeal runs deeper than a clever color scheme. It comes down to the origin story.

Founded by legendary Japanese racing driver Tetsu Ikuzawa, Team Ikuzawa has evolved under the direction of his daughter, Mai, into something far broader than a racing team. Today it operates as a creative studio that moves comfortably between motorsport, fashion, photography, design and luxury, preserving automotive history for a new generation. It is as likely to collaborate with a fashion house as it is to appear at a historic race meeting, making it one of the most influential creative voices in contemporary car culture.

That makes customizer George Bamford and Bamford Watch Department a natural partner. Like Mai Ikuzawa, Bamford has built his reputation on reinterpreting established objects without losing sight of what made them successful in the first place. Watches rather than cars may be his medium, but the idea is remarkably similar.

“When I look at collaborations, I think they should take you in a new direction and introduce a new design language,” Bamford says. “Team Ikuzawa’s Roadmaster became the inspiration for this watch. I’ve had one on my wall for years. The red on the crown, the three straps, and the toolbox case, all of those elements pushed us toward what I’d call a new language for the Carrera.” And that idea of introducing another language and moving the design forward, rather than simply employing another color scheme, runs throughout the watch.

The Carrera has always been an exercise in legibility. When Jack Heuer introduced it in 1963, every detail served a purpose. The broad dial opening, clear typography, and balanced layout were intended to communicate elapsed time instantly under racing conditions. The Roadmaster stopwatches used by Team Ikuzawa were solving exactly the same problem.

That shared goal explains why the collaboration never feels forced or created. This is not a Carrera masquerading in Team Ikuzawa colors. The influence runs deeper, reaching into the team’s archive and drawing on the graphic language of the Roadmaster stopwatches that became a familiar sight in Japanese motorsport during the 1970s and 1980s. The printed indexes nod to vintage timing instruments, while the red accents anchor Team Ikuzawa’s visual identity.

The most controversial choice—and arguably the most effective—is what’s missing. Omitting the running seconds display will divide purists who insist on seeing a continuous mechanical pulse on the dial. Here, though, its absence creates the negative space needed for the Team Ikuzawa signature at 6 o’clock. Rather than crowding the layout, the graphics have room to breathe, reinforcing the legibility central to both Heuer’s and Ikuzawa’s original instruments.

Using the 39mm “Glassbox” Carrera platform amplifies that effect. The edge-to-edge crystal and ultra-slim bezel maximize the dial space, allowing the graphics to take center stage while preserving the sharp proportions of the modern Carrera.

Bamford’s contribution is perhaps best understood through what he chooses not to change. “I wouldn’t touch the movement,” he says. “For me, that’s paramount. The Carrera is one of the ultimate chronographs and Jack Heuer created an amazing legacy for TAG Heuer, along with so many other great watches. This Team Ikuzawa Carrera looks to the past while bringing something new to the collection.”

It is a revealing comment. Bamford may have spent two decades building his reputation by reimagining watches, yet his instinct (as well as that of Team Ikuzawa) is not to compete with Jack Heuer’s foundation, but rather to frame it from a different angle, introducing a fresh graphic identity while keeping the Carrera’s core identity intact. Perhaps that explains why TAG Heuer returns to previous creative partners such as Bamford Watch Department and Team Ikuzawa. Nobody is trying to reinvent the Carrera. Instead, each brings a distinct perspective that reveals another facet of one of history’s most recognizable chronographs.

Many modern watch collaborations feel like quick logo-swaps designed for a bump in hype. This Carrera succeeds because its choices are rooted in genuine motorsport heritage and executed with caution. In doing so, it doesn’t just reference Japanese racing culture, it honors the design language of the people who built it.
