Last Week In Watches: TAG Heuer Carrera, JLC Grande Sonnerie, Louis Vuitton Spin Time and more

TAG Heuer takes a leaner Carrera racing in Madrid, Jaeger-LeCoultre revisits its monumental Grande Sonnerie, Panerai marks 100 years in Florence, Louis Vuitton expands Spin Time, and Chronoswiss and Jacob & Co. embrace pastels.

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Sport

As Formula 1 laid fresh rubber on the new Madring circuit over the weekend, TAG Heuer also launched a sharpened Carrera Chronograph Sport. The fixed-bezel racing chronograph is brought down in case size from 44mm to a more wearable 42mm, and a thinner 14.2mm height. The steel collection spans black, blue, teal green and silver panda dials, all paired with an H-shaped bracelet with easy-link sizing. Under the hood is the automatic TH20-00, pairing a column wheel, a vertical clutch with bi-directional winding, and 80 hours of autonomy.

The rectangular steel case measures 48mm x 30mm and retains the Neo Digiteur display with 3 separate windows and discs to tell time: a jumping hour at 12, sweeping minutes in the center and sweeping seconds at six. Panerai Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni PAM01734 and PAM01794

Panerai Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni (©Revolution)

Panerai celebrates a full century of its historic Florence boutique with the PAM01734, a rather grand interpretation of the rare 1960s Ref. 6152/1 prototype. The 44m Platinumtech case frames a deep green, circular-brushed sandwich dial, with gold pencil hands, a crown-protection bridge with inner grooves borrowed from the original to improve access and grip, and a “Panerai Firenze” inscription – a nod to the city’s Italian name. The PAM01734 is rated to 100 meters, features an sapphire display caseback with a view of the massive three-quarter plate and is limited to 100 pieces.

The more tool-minded interpretation is the 1,000-piece PAM01794, which places the same historical cues into a polished 44m steel case instead. It pairs a black, circular-brushed sandwich dial with blued pencil hands, the “Panerai Firenze” inscription and the grooved crown-protection bridge. The water resistance is increased to 300 meters and features a closed caseback with an engraving of the Florence boutique. Both the steel and Platinumtech models are powered by the hand-wound P.5000, providing eight days of power.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre Grande Complication à Grande Sonnerie

The Duometre Grande Complication à Grande Sonnerie is easily this week’s technical heavyweight: 15 different complications and roughly 1,300 components inside a 45mm case combining a titanium body with pink-gold elements. Caliber 182, first introduced in 2009, delivers Westminster-style Grande and Petite Sonnerie, a minute repeater module through four gongs and four hammers, alongside a retrograde perpetual calendar, and a flying tourbillon. The revised version sees metallic-glass gongs and a titanium construction that improve acoustic performance, while the more extensively open-worked dial reveals more of the magic inside. The movement takes a full year just to assemble and regulate, and the watch is a pièce unique.

Louis Vuitton Tambour Spin Time

Louis Vuitton Tambour Spin Time New Collections

Louis Vuitton has brought five new interpretations of the Spin Time into its permanent collection. At 39.5mm, there is a deep-green white-gold model and a rose-gold version with a unique Australian opal dial and a blue sapphire setting; the 42.5mm versions comprises a blue white-gold Spin Time Air, the Antipode worldtimer and a platinum Air Flying Tourbillon with a salmon-colored dial. The visuals of the rotating cubes on the display continue to borrow the logic of airport flipboards, while the Antipode cleverly assigns two opposing cities to each cube.
