LVMH Watch Week: TAG Heuer Celebrates the Carrera’s 60th Anniversary and Other Highlights

Share

TAG Heuer starts its new year with a slew of launches at the LVMH Watch Week 2023, ranging from faithful vintage reissue Carrera Chronograph to ultra-modern connected watches designed for golfing, but the headline is doubtlessly the Monza Flyback Chronometer.

Monza Flyback Chronometer

Introduced in 1976 by Jack Heuer to celebrate Ferrari’s long-overdue win in the F1 World Championship, the Monza was originally a racing chronograph with a cushion case that’s coated in black, which later inspired the famous Monaco “Dark Lord”. Now the Monza returns in a similar palette, but it’s naturally black (or more accurately dark grey) and the colour won’t fade, thanks to the modern case made entirely of carbon.

To pair with the contemporary case, the dial has been open-worked while painted in striking colours such as blue and red. The open-worked dial reveals perhaps the biggest highlight of the watch: the Calibre Heuer 02 Flyback, which is more complicated than the standard Heuer 02 as it’s equipped with an additional flyback function, meaning the chronograph can be reset and restarted while it’s running.

Debuted in 1963, the Carrera Chronograph marks its 60th anniversary this year with the return of a familiar vintage Heuer look. Like the many recent remakes, the latest is inspired by the ref. 2447, specifically the ref. 2447 SN with a “panda” dial. It’s a limited edition of 600 pieces, making it a far smaller run than the earlier all-silver version, but this would be the first of a slew of anniversary editions.

Notably, the Carrera Chronograph 60th Anniversary stays true to the original right down to little details like the lacquer-filled faceted hour markers. The black markers as well as hands reinforce the “panda” palette, while also serving practical purposes by improving visual contrast and readability. The only obvious difference between the new and old is the size, which is now 39 mm as opposed to the original 36 mm.

Like most TAG Heuer’s chronographs, the latest is powered by the excellent Heuer 02, an automatic movement with 80 hours of power reserve. It’s equipped with all the features expected of a practical chronograph, namely a vertical clutch and a column wheel.

Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph

Launched just last year, the Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph was an interesting solar-powered dive watch with a glow-in-the-dark carbon bezel insert, but its highly modern look is certainly not for everyone. And now the brand has revealed a more traditional version of the Solargraph that will appeal to fans of the classic Aquaracers.

Still wearable at 40 mm, the new Solargraph is end-to-end titanium and has a familiar look expected of an Aquaracer, though it sports several differences that are crucial in elevating the look. That includes the sand-blasted case and bracelet that feel rugged, which have been nicely balanced with the turquoise hands and markers that liven up the dial.

A luxury version of a smartwatch, the TAG Heuer Connected is nevertheless executed very well and easily stands out from its competitors in cosmetic terms. But the Connected is much more than a refined case, as the watch incorporates innovations that enhance its functionality, such as the brand’s exclusive applications for sports.

One of the Connected’s biggest highlights is the Golf app, which allows users to track the game and carry out post-round analysis with the statistics recorded and presented with nice graphics. According to TAG Heuer, the new Full Shot Tracking function of the watch will automatically track scores without requiring any intervention, so the user can focus on the game.

Though the Golf app is available across all Connected models, the Golf Edition has a special bezel that counts from the number one to 18, which denote the 18 holes on a golf course. Coupled with the displays on the screen, the bezel helps the users to keep track of their progress of the game.

TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 42mm Golf Edition

Previously only offered in the large 45 mm sizing, the Golf Edition is now available in the 42 mm case for the first time. The 42 mm size is a relatively new option that was only introduced last year when the brand revamps the line up with the brand-new and excellent Calibre E4, though the 42 mm cases were all made of steel, until now. The 42 mm Golf Edition has a new black-coated titanium case that gives the watch a fitting sporty look.

Connected Calibre E4

Like the 42 mm Golf Edition above, the Connected Calibre E4 is a 42 mm watch made of black-coated titanium, a material that’s new to this case size. Being a standard Connected watch, the latest is identical to the rest of the collection save for the material, which means it also lacks the special bezel that’s reserved for the Golf Edition.

While the two connected watches above are 42 mm, TAG Heuer also introduces a new 45 mm version. In sandblasted and black-coated titanium, the Sports Edition is equipped with a redesigned strap that’s made of two parts, a rubber base with a fine mesh on top. According to the brand, the colourful mesh serves more than aesthetic purpose as it helps improve ventilation of the skin.

Notably, the Sports Edition is upgraded with a new barometer that’s fine-tuned to better track the changing gradients during sports. The function arrives just in time for the new Trail and Hiking app that’ll be rolled out in February 2023 along with a software update.
