Naturally Sweet — The New Lange 1815 Watch In Honey Gold

I like yellow gold. I know this is not a popular choice by any means, but I’m not going to apologise for it or anything. There is something about the unabashed richness of the hue in question that I find impossible to ignore. Rose gold, when used sparingly, can impart incredible warmth to a timepiece. When used in a watch with a sporty design, it can be outright forceful. With classic designs, however, I find full rose-gold watches a little too pushy, a little too forward. White gold is of course the voice of restrained elegance, but its austere beauty doesn’t get much traction with my love of colour.

Yellow-gold watches unfortunately aren’t very trendy at the moment, which is a shame, because they really reinforce the timeless look of the classically designed, minimalistic watches which are doing really well at the moment. It’s all but completely faded from the A Lange & Söhne collection, for example, but the Glashütte-based company has something that no one else does.

In 2010, A Lange & Söhne debuted a lovely trio of watches celebrating the 165th year since Ferdinand Adolph Lange first founded the watch company that now bears his name. They were the Homage to FA Lange Tourbograph “Pour Le Mérite”, the Homage to FA Lange 1815 Moonphase and the Homage to FA Lange Lange 1 Tourbillon.

These watches were created in honey gold, a proprietary alloy that approximates the pale amber tint of its eponymous natural sweetener. For years after the launch, the company consistently received questions about when Lange would produce another watch in this fabulously understated material.

This year, which is the 200th year since the birth of the brand founder, Lange & Söhne have released what everyone was asking for — another watch in honey gold.

The 1815 200th Anniversary FA Lange in honey gold is a simple and discreet 40mm watch with only the essentials represented on the dial. Hours, minutes and small seconds. On the reverse, a transparent sapphire crystal caseback  displays the calibre L051.1 with all the well-loved Lange hallmarks — hand-engraved balance cock, traditional three-quarter plate, whiplash regulator, gold chatons around the jewels and exceptional finishing. Only 200 of these exclusive timepieces will be made, and they are individually numbered.

Stay tuned for our coverage of the other Watches & Wonders novelties from Lange, including the new Little Lange 1 and the new Saxonias.
