Panerai Sails Again with Two New Luna Rossa Releases
This year, Panerai continues its role as Official Sponsor of the Luna Rossa Sailing Team, and, with the competition for the 38th America’s Cup gearing up to crucial races near Naples, Italy, next year, it’s the perfect time for some Luna Rossa-themed watches. Which is exactly what we get with PAM01768 and PAM01791. Two different watches, united by a focus on functionality and a striking colour scheme.
- Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono PAM01768
- Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa GMT PAM01791
First up, the Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono PAM01768 (to give it its formal name) is a 44mm chronograph in the familiar Luminor case, powered by the P.9210 calibre, a twin-register chronograph with pushers on the left of the case (thanks to that right-hand crown guard).
The silver dial matches that steel case, creating a monochromatic model with the occasional red highlight, nicely in keeping with the Luna Rossa livery. The caseback is closed, water-resistant, it’s decent at 100M, and the limited edition watch introduces a new velcro strap to the Luna Rossa line, a tapered in grey textile pattern with a red stripe, and a black rubber strap for when you want to tone it down.
If the chronograph isn’t your speed, try the Luminor Luna Rossa GMT PAM01791. This 40mm steel GMT shares the same overall palette as the PAM01768, but in an even more tool-like form. It comes on a tapered metal bracelet (a first for a Luna Rossa watch), and offers GMT functionality, with the central second hour hand tipped in red, inspired by the Luna Rossa boat’s sail. The dial is in silver, with the same azurage sub-counter finish and luminous notes as the chronograph, while the bracelet uses Panerai’s quick-release system.
The PAM01768 chronograph is limited to 500 pieces, while the GMT is not limited.
