Panerai Plays the Long Game with the Luminor

This year, Panerai uses the Luminor to reconnect with two ideas that have long defined the brand: the Reference 6152/1-inspired case design of its military watches, and the pursuit of longer-running hand-wound movements.

The headline watch is definitely the Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631. Containing the new hand-wound P.2031/S caliber with its four barrels in series for a full 31-day power reserve, it’s for sure the brand’s most ambitious technical statement of the year. But the 31 Giorni does not stand alone. Around it sits a broader group of Luminors that looks back to the Ref. 6152/1, one of the military-era Panerai watches that helped establish the Luminor’s defining shape, through large cushion-shaped cases, crown-protecting bridges, domed crystals, sandwich dials, Destro configurations and tropical tones.

Ref. 6152/1 and the Long Shadow of the Angelus Movement

Let’s return to the Ref. 6152/1, one of the watches that helped shape what many collectors now recognize as the archetypal Panerai. Originally produced for military use in 1955, the 6152/1 established much of the visual design language that continues to define the Luminor today. Again, we’re talking about the large cushion-shaped case, the broad dial opening, the highly legible luminous display and, most crucially, the crown-protecting bridge.

The 6152/1 also matters on the inside. While earlier Panerai watches were often powered by Rolex-supplied movements, certain examples of the 6152/1 were fitted with the Angelus SF240, a hand-wound movement with an eight-day power reserve. For a military diver’s instrument, a long power reserve had a clear functional purpose. It reduces the need for frequent winding, limiting unnecessary wear around the crown and case seals — an important consideration for a watch expected to perform in demanding underwater conditions.

Panerai’s modern obsession with power reserve makes sense. Its long-running movements are part of a lineage that connects today’s watches to the requirements that shaped Panerai’s early instruments. And in 2026, that thread stretches from the Luminor 8 Giorni all the way to the Luminor 31 Giorni.

The Month-Long Luminor

The Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631 is the most technically impressive Luminor this year, because it stretches Panerai’s long-power-reserve tradition to a full month of autonomy. Housed in a 44mm Goldtech case and limited to 200 pieces, it introduces the new hand-wound skeletonized P.2031/S caliber, developed over seven years to deliver 31 days of running time on a single wind.

The movement uses four barrels in a series, supported by patented solutions including a spring geometry system, a jumping hour and a torque limiter. In theory, the watch could actually go a little longer, up to 36 days, but the stabilization of these solutions help manage the release of that energy across such a long period while maintaining accuracy in its timekeeping as much as possible.

Three Ways Back to the 6152/1

The rest of this year’s Luminor collection looks more directly to the 6152/1, though not exact reissues, but contemporary interpretations.

The Luminor PAM01731 is perhaps the most straightforward expression. Sized at the usual 44mm, it features a sandwich-style brown tobacco dial with small seconds at 9 o’clock, providing a warmer, more period-correct character. The hand-wound P.6000 caliber keeps the mechanical proposition simple and robust with three days of power reserve.

The Luminor PAM01735, leans more openly into the brand’s vintage-style imagination. At 47mm, it’s closer to the historical Panerai watches, while its ivory matte sandwich dial with a brown gradient takes inspiration from archival references with tropical dials that have aged from black into warmer tones over time. The domed crystal, polished steel bezel and hand-wound P.3000 caliber provides three days of power reserve and is visible through the caseback, speaking to true collectors who are drawn to Panerai’s more romantic, archival side.

My personal favorite of the bunch, the Luminor Destro PAM01732 adds another historical layer. Its left-sided crown-protecting bridge was inspired by an early configuration developed for military divers with other instruments required on their left wrist, which leaves them just their right wrist for a watch. This 44mm version is fitted with a matte blue sandwich dial, a first for the Luminor Destro, making it the most recognizable watch in the lineup.

From Eight Days to Forged Titanium

For the Luminor 8 Giorni PAM01733, we’re looking at the most direct historical bridge, recalling both the looks of the 6152/1 and the SF240 movements.

Here, the watch is powered by the hand-wound P.5000 caliber, which uses two barrels to deliver the eight-day power reserve. Housed inside a 44mm brunito steel case, the movement feels particularly appropriate. The additional hand-worked finish needed to give the case an aged look was actually a tactical reason for the military as it provided less sheen when compared to its polished stainless steel counterparts — which is absolutely essential for covert operations. The anthracite circular-brushed sandwich dial also adds additional texture without disrupting the fundamental clarity expected of a Panerai.

Finally, the Luminor PAM01629 brings another side of Panerai into the conversation: a long-running interest in advanced case materials. Limited to 100 pieces, it introduces forged titanium to the Luminor collection for the first time, using the material in a 47mm case that retains its broad, assertive shape. The forged titanium produces wave-like layers across the case, giving each piece a unique character. Paired with an anthracite sun-brushed dial and beige lume, the watch remains recognizably Panerai. Inside is the hand-wound P.3000 caliber, visible through the caseback.

For a brand whose watches have always depended on presence, utility and a defined visual identity, Panerai’s new Luminor line shapes up to be the right kind of progress. The Luminor remains unmistakably itself, but now with a longer memory and a much longer run.
