There is a reason some watch designs can be described as classic without having been around for decades. The formula is usually simple: a round case of good proportions, clear dial, elegant hands and just enough detail to stop the whole thing becoming anonymous. Frederique Constant got much of that right when it introduced the Classics Moneta Moonphase in 2024. At 37mm and just 7.65mm thick, the quartz-powered dress watch was modest, with dauphine-style hands and a fluted inner ring inspired by the milled edge of a coin, the detail from which Moneta (Latin for mint or money) takes its name.

Two years later, the Classics Moneta Handwinding keeps that defining coin-edge rehaut, but changes almost everything around it. The case grows to 38.5mm and 10.13mm thick, the moonphase disappears and a small seconds takes its place at 6 o’clock. Most importantly, the quartz movement makes way for the new hand-wound FC-435 – a customised La Joux-Perret caliber. Running at 4Hz, it provides a useful 63-hour power reserve and can be seen through the sapphire caseback.

It feels like a natural progression for a design that was always more interesting than its original specification suggested. The Moneta’s appeal comes from detail rather than novelty. Here, the hand-wound movement, small seconds, black alligator strap and smoked salmon dial fading towards black push it further towards the mid-century dress-watch territory its design already occupied. The coin-edged inner ring remains the clever bit, adding texture and identity without disturbing an otherwise very traditional layout.

There is a price for the upgrade. The original Moneta Moonphase launched in the US at $1,295, while this limited edition of 999 pieces costs $2,595. It is also thicker and loses the moonphase complication. But the mechanical movement changes the character of the watch completely. The first Moneta was a very good-looking, inexpensive dress watch. This one feels much closer to the sort of watch its design was always destined to become.
