Introducing the Oris Hangang Limited EditionBy Adam Craniotes
For the past ten years, Oris has been releasing limited edition watches that benefit worthy causes with a focus on reef and marine wildlife preservation and freshwater conservation. The first of these was the Great Barrier Reef LE, which was released in 2010 to benefit the Australian Marine Conservation Society. It was followed in short order by other divers that honored organizations such as Bluepeace in the Maldives, the Tubbataha Reef Project in the Philippines, the Red Sea Environmental Centre, and even hammerhead shark conservation in conjunction with Pelagios Kaunjá. Part of the proceeds from the sale of all of these watches goes directly to the organizations that they support, in addition to the generous donation that Oris already provides.
With their latest, the Hangang Limited Edition, Oris’ Change For The Better initiative, has partnered with Seoul KFEM, which is part of the Korea Federation for Environmental Movements. The focus of their work: The Hangang River.
The Hangang River is the second-longest river in Korea, but as the primary source of water for the country’s 10 million citizens, it is the most important by far. Unfortunately, years of neglect have left it dirty, polluted, and in desperate need of restoration. As part of the new partnership, Oris will be supporting a series of clean-up days Seoul KFEM has scheduled for later this year. During these, hundreds of local volunteers will work along the river to pick up litter, plastic, and other harmful pollutants.
The Hangang LE, based on the Aquis Small Seconds, takes the traditional Aquis aesthetic and ups the ante with a green ceramic bezel and shimming emerald sunburst dial, which evokes the creek waters at the source of the Hangang and the lush foliage along the banks. On the caseback, an engraving of the Hangang as it wends its way through Korea and the individual LE number round out the package. Like all Aquis dive watches, the water-resistance is a generous 300M.
