Introducing The Longines Heritage Military Marine Nationale

It is safe to say that in recent years, Longines’ most popular collection for watch enthusiasts has been their Heritage collection. With releases such as their Skin Diver Watch, Heritage Classic, or Heritage Classic Tuxedo, the maison has been releasing hits after hits and this has served as an admirable way for them to showcase their impressive history and heritage.

Their newest release is the Heritage Military Marine Nationale which is a modern re-interpretation of a military watch that they produced for the crews of the French Navy in the late 1940’s after the second World War; the Longines ref. 5774. The new Longines Heritage Military Marine Nationale respects the design of the original timepiece with warm colours and a subdued but very legible dial.

The original watch from 1947 was mainly used for shallow diving purposes and was a small 33.50mm in diameter but featuring a robust case and bezel typical of military models. The watch was powered by Longines’ historical 12.68N movement.

The new model brings an updated case size of 38.50mm in diameter putting it in a very favorable position among modern timepieces, which have seen a reduction in sizing over the past few years. Presented on a cognac leather strap and bestowed with a golden opaline dial, the Heritage Military Marine Nationale keeps the vintage aesthetics and strong appeal of the ref. 5774, mainly the counterweight seconds hands, a rare detail in Longines watches. Just like its older counterpart, this new re-edition will only be suitable for shallow diving or pool swimming as it features only a 30m water depth rating. Powering the watch is the automatic L888.5 calibre with a silicon balance spring, developed exclusively for the brand by ETA.

The watch has a lightly grained dial with blued steel hands coated with brown Superluminova

The last little detail taken from the original watch, which will really attract vintage lovers to this timepiece, is seen on the dial where the words “LONGINES FAB. SUISSE”, for Swiss made (Fabrique Suisse), are featured in a vintage font.
