Grand Seiko pays homage to the revered art of Washi-making, the Japanese art of handcrafting paper, with the limited-edition SBGJ283. Limited to just 150 pieces, the watch features a lustrous textured off-white dial. The subtle patterns evoke the nuanced beauty of Washi paper, while the red GMT hand, inspired by the red fruit of the Kozo, creates a striking contrast.

The 800-year-old art of Washi: A timeless Japanese craft

Washi, the traditional Japanese paper, is a cornerstone of Japan’s cultural heritage, with a history spanning over 800 years. Derived from the inner bark of the Kozo (mulberry tree), this delicate yet durable paper is crafted through a meticulous, labor-intensive process passed down through generations. Originally created for practical purposes such as writing, Washi soon evolved into an artistic medium, gracing calligraphy scrolls, shoji screens, lanterns, and ceremonial objects. Its unique and porous texture have made it a revered element in Japanese interior design, echoing the nation’s deep appreciation for simplicity and harmony.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Washi holds profound cultural significance. It embodies the Japanese philosophy of “wabi-sabi,” finding beauty in imperfection and transience. Recognizing its value, UNESCO inscribed Washi-making on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014. Today, Washi remains a symbol of Japan’s dedication to preserving traditional crafts, blending practicality with artistic expression and ensuring this ancient art continues to inspire new generations.

Encased in Ever-Brilliant Steel — a highly corrosion-resistant alloy with a superior PREN rating — the watch inherits the sleek design language of the 1967 original 44GS model, characterized by mirror-finished flat surfaces. Powered by the Hi-Beat Caliber 9S86, the SBGJ283 offers exceptional precision (+5 to -3 seconds per day) and dual-time functionality, perfect for the modern globetrotter.

The watch is exclusively available at Grand Seiko boutiques and authorized retailers in the Asia Pacific starting January 1, 2025.
