Decoding the manifold appeal of Grand Seiko’s all-new Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver

Underwater, precision is a matter of life and death.

 

From knowing exactly how much gas you have left in your tank and how long it will last at depth to controlling your ascent to surface, accuracy is key in diving. Time, of course, is of the essence. Every second and minute counts towards different outcomes — bloodshot eyes, burst drums and time in a decompression chamber, or a safe return to the surface. And while modern dives rely more on dive computers than dive watches to calculate the finer details, the latter are still the most reliable of tools to have. They remain the simplest, most elemental way to measure time underwater. In the most unfortunate scenario that electronics fail, the humble mechanical dive watch becomes the final line of defense, a reliable means to tell elapsed time and track bottom time, or the time a diver spends underwater between descent and ascent.

 

Accordingly, the requirements for a dive watch are strict and manifold. It must be water resistant to at least 100 meters with a unidirectional rotating bezel, based on ISO 6425 guidelines. It must also be highly legible in low-light conditions, robust and built to stand up to pressure and temperature variations, saltwater corrosion and all the shocks, knocks and vagaries that life underwater might throw at it. In water, it must be easy to operate with wet or gloved hands. Out of water, it must be easy to service, should the need arise. Above all, it must be relentlessly accurate in timekeeping, to ensure the precise measurement of elapsed dive times.

The Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver is the latest in the long line of Grand Seiko divers that accomplishes all of these brilliantly. It checks all of the above and in many instances far supersedes ISO requirements.

 

“Ushio” means tide or ocean current in Japanese, and the Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver is so named as a tribute to the seas surrounding Japan. Its dial bears the undulating wave motif seen in 2022’s SLGA015, the first of Grand Seiko’s Ushio-inspired divers housed in an Evolution 9 case with an inky black dial, and again in 2023’s SLGA023 with a blue dial.

For 2026, Grand Seiko is presenting two colorways: a deep radiant blue that recalls the 2023 diver and a mesmerizing sea green, both paired with matching bezels. But beyond color, the Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver is a true evolution for Grand Seiko on several counts, within what is a fiercely competitive luxury dive watch category.

 

It is smaller, sleeker and, as tool watches go, a whole lot meaner with new impressive specs. Its case, dial and bracelet have all been reworked for a sleeker profile, improved legibility and a welcome versatility that lets it cross over effortlessly from open water to terra firma. On the inside, it features a new and updated caliber, the Spring Drive U.F.A. 9RB1. And thanks to that, in one extremely key and specific aspect, it far outshines its predecessor and competition — that of precision.

A New Era of Accuracy

So what exactly is so special about the Spring Drive and its latest evolution, the Spring Drive U.F.A? The short answer is everything. But, of course, the long version is far more interesting.

 

When it was first announced as a new kind of watch movement at Baselworld in 1998 by Seiko Watch Corporation, the Spring Drive caused a tidal wave of excitement and the ripples are still being felt today. The core idea behind the Spring Drive is ingenious — to marry the reliability and precision of quartz with the poetry and autonomy of a mechanical watch. Yoshikazu Akahane, then a young engineer at Suwa Seikosha (today Seiko Epson Corporation), believed a quartz-powered oscillator could help to improve and better regulate the accuracy of a mechanical watch. The traditional escapement is inherently vulnerable and variable; it relies on a sequence of contact, locking and impulse between the escape wheel, pallet fork and balance. A quartz-powered oscillator, on the other hand, is freed from such collisions of teeth and pallets, and therefore vastly more stable and reliable.

 

It took more than 20 years of monumental perseverance and remarkable ingenuity, but this eventually became reality. Sadly, Akahane never saw it. He passed away in 1998, about a year before Spring Drive was presented to the world.

 

The Caliber 9R65 was the very first Spring Drive movement launched under Grand Seiko in 2004, separate from earlier manifestations within Seiko. It was an automatic movement with 72 hours of power reserve, date and power reserve indicators, and a rate deviation of ±15 seconds per month, or just ±1 second per day. For comparison, COSC has a baseline of −4/+6 seconds per day, while METAS Master Chronometer certification mandates a deviation of 0/+5 seconds per day. No doubt about it, Grand Seiko’s quartz-regulated, mainspring-powered Spring Drive is in a league of its own.

Its unprecedented accuracy was, of course, a key factor for Grand Seiko in choosing the Spring Drive for its diver. Kiyotaka Sakai, Grand Seiko’s award-winning product designer responsible for many of the brand’s iconic designs, explains, “Spring Drive was the natural choice because it is particularly well suited to a sports diver. Since it does not rely on a traditional balance wheel and escapement, it offers greater stability and resistance to shocks and environmental influences.”

The very first Grand Seiko diver made its appearance four years later in 2008 with a splash. Double-signed with Seiko, the SBGA029 was a 200m diver powered by the 9R65 caliber. Weighing in at 201g with a case diameter of 44.2mm, 14mm thick and 51mm lug-to-lug, it divers was generally well received, subsequent releases saw the brand turn its attention toward building its three-pillar structure based on the 9S mechanical, 9F quartz, and 9R Spring Drive movements. In 2014, Grand Seiko launched its first quartz divers, the SBGX115 and SBGX117. Three years later in 2017, it unveiled the SBGH255, a saturation diver water resistant to 600m, with valve-free helium resistance and powered by the high-beat Caliber 9S85.

In the meantime, the next few generations of Spring Drive strengthened Grand Seiko’s lead in the pursuit of mechanical precision. In 2005 and 2007, Grand Seiko amped things up with GMT and chronograph functions in the 9R66 and 9R86. In 2015, it improved the accuracy to ±10 seconds per month in the 9R96, which was based on the 9R86, but specially adjusted with extra high-performance quartz oscillators for greater precision. There was also the manual winding 9R01, with three barrels and a whopping eight days of power reserve. In 2019, Grand Seiko presented the iconic manual winding 9R02 with two mainsprings in a single barrel, and a unique system of utilizing unused torque to extend the power reserve to 84 hours.

 

The 9R Series Redefines Mechanical Precision

It was the next-generation 9RA5 in 2020 that made the world sit up. A Spring Drive movement, it came with an improved five-day power reserve, thanks to the use of two barrels in two different sizes, carefully arranged for maximum power while maximizing limited space. It had a special Offset Magic Lever that minimized the load of the crank wheel. It was so-named because it was offset from the center of the movement, and in doing so, shaved 0.3mm off its thickness compared with the Caliber 9R6 series. This, in turn, translated into a slimmer profile and less bulk on the wrist. In place of the barrel bridge, center wheel bridge and winding stem cock in three separate parts, it now had a one-piece center bridge that protected the movement components more securely, especially most of the gear train, shielding them from shocks. Importantly, it boasted a new advanced temperature sensor located in its integrated circuit to monitor and compensate for any temperature variation that might affect the performance of the quartz oscillator. Unlike in earlier calibers, here the oscillator and integrated circuit were vacuumed-sealed together, which ensured very precise temperature adjustments and helped to minimize any environmental changes, such as humidity.

In real terms, these advancements were astounding. It meant that the Spring Drive movement was now slimmer, stronger and more resistant to shocks and changes in temperature. With its dual-size barrels, it also used energy more efficiently to stay powered up for longer. All of these made it particularly suited for use in a dive watch, where the operating environment is harsh and unpredictable, and precision is paramount.

 

The 9RA5 made its debut in the impressive SLGA001, a special edition to mark the brand’s 60th anniversary and limited to 700 pieces. The first Spring Drive professional divers’ watch by Grand Seiko, it came with a depth rating of 600m and bore the gold standard of Grand Seiko divers. It was highly legible with a simple, fuss-free layout; power reserve was clearly demarcated in five parts and sat at 10 o’clock, with date at 4 o’clock. It was robust and built to withstand shocks in its high-intensity titanium case, which sat light on the wrist at just 164g. Above all, it was incredibly precise to the tune of ±10 seconds per month, or ±0.5 seconds a day, thanks to its Spring Drive caliber.

Two years later, in 2022, for its debut outing at Watches and Wonders, Grand Seiko introduced another diver powered by the Spring Drive Caliber 9RA5. This time, the SLGA015 formed part of the core collection, rather than a once-off edition. It was rated to 200m for recreational dives, rather than professional, which immediately positioned it for a much broader appeal. The SLGA015 was also the first diver housed in Grand Seiko’s signature Evolution 9 designed case with wider lugs and lower center of gravity for comfort on the wrist. And compared to the hulky SLGA001 at 46.9mm and 16mm thick, it was a relatively svelte 43.8mm and 13.8mm thick, which made it far more wearable, both in and out of water. It was the first to bear a beautiful wave motif on its dial inspired by the Kuroshio Current, which is also known as the Black Currrent. The wave motif finds a brand new interpretation in the Ushio 300 Diver, but more on this later.

Then came 2025, a truly watershed year for Grand Seiko. At Watches and Wonders that year, it unveiled the very first Spring Drive U.F.A. 9RB2, so denoted for its Ultra Fine Accuracy that set an incredible new rate deviation benchmark for a mechanical wristwatch: ±20 seconds per year. This translated to a rate of ±3 seconds per month. As for deviations on a per day basis, they were so negligible that they were hardly worth mention.

The 9RB2 bore all the upgrades of its predecessor in an updated integrated circuit. In place of the dual barrels of the 9RA2 that netted five days of power reserve, it relied on just a reworked single barrel that provided 72 hours of power reserve, but with improved energy transmission. At 30mm wide, the 9RB2 was smaller than the 34mm 9RA5 caliber. Its magnetic shielding had been reworked, and this allowed the watch to be in a much smaller 37mm case for the first time. The 9RA movements, in comparison, could only be fitted into cases 40mm and above. To ensure ease of servicing and maintain the rate accuracy, the movement also featured a regulation switch. A first for the Spring Drive movement, this meant that watchmakers could correct deviations without disassembling the entire movement.

 

 

The Spring Drive U.F.A. 9RB2 was first launched in two references of the Evolution 9 Collection, with the theme Ice Forest, the stunning SLGB001 and SLGB003. Both measured just 37mm, with a date at 3 o’clock and power reserve on the caseback. But it was only a matter of time before Grand Seiko utilized its best-performing and most shock and temperature resistant movement on a platform uniquely positioned to showcase its best qualities — the diver.

 

Into The Deep with Style

At this year’s Watches and Wonders, Grand Seiko presented the all-new Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver powered by the 2026 iteration of the U.F.A., the 9RB1. It is the most accurate mechanical diver on the market and the smallest in the brand’s catalog. It is also one of the most appealing divers right now.

The 9RB1 brings the prowess of the Spring Drive U.F.A. to bear on the new watch, beginning, of course, with precision. The Ushio 300 Diver is accurate to the tune of ±20 seconds per year. In a dive watch where precision is key, this stands unrivaled as mechanical watches go. And as with the rest of Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive-powered dive watches, it is well-equipped to deal with pressure, temperature and the myriad demands of the deep.

On first impression, the changes from 2025’s Caliber 9RB2 to the latest 9RB1 are cursory. The power reserve originally positioned on the back has now been moved to dial-side in the 9RB1, a most practical consideration in a dive watch. Underwater, there is simply little opportunity to unstrap and flip the watch over to check its power reserve. The 9RB1 also leaves out the date function at 3 o’clock in favor of a more streamlined dial layout, another well-considered move given the smaller size of the watch. But the movement itself has also been improved and optimized for better shock resistance. While existing models housing the 9RB2 are generally rated to 100m, the case structure of the new Ushio diver bearing the 9RB1 has been engineered for a more professional 300m of water resistance.

The evolution from 2022’s Diver 200m to this year’s Ushio 300 Diver is perhaps most evident on the wrist. The new watch is housed in a 40.8mm case, shaving 3mm off its 43.8mm predecessor. It is 12.9mm thick with a bandwidth of 21mm versus 13.8mm and a bandwidth of 23mm in the earlier watch. Clearly, numbers alone do not a watch make. The key here is that they reflect new streamlined proportions that make Grand Seiko’s Ushio diver much more versatile and wearable, both in and out of watery depths. These dimensions are entirely in line with the prevailing preference for smaller sizes, and make this an effortless daily wear. Compared to the Diver 200m, which was bulkier around the girth with flared lugs that extended around the case into the crown guard, the new Ushio 300 Diver is slender and elongated, with faceted angular lugs that sit closer to the case but gently curved to hug the wrist. The overall impression is thus one of stylish proportions and greater wearability, which bears out in its lug-to-lug measurement of 48.5mm.

 

“One of the key challenges was balancing the technical requirements of a high-performance diver with the aesthetics of Grand Seiko and the Evolution 9 style,” Sakai admits. “Diver’s watches have a specialized structure, especially due to the rotating bezel, which makes Zaratsu polishing more difficult, particularly around the upper lug surfaces. Because of this, the case geometry had to be adapted from typical Evolution 9 models while still preserving a strong and bold appearance.”

 

Given its 300m rating, the Ushio 300 Diver crosses over into professional dive watch territory. But compared with the rest of Grand Seiko’s professional divers, it is positively svelte. Crucially, this is achieved without compromising its integrity as a diver. A smaller case size means less real estate on the dial. For a diver, this can be tricky because of the information that needs to be conveyed and the clarity required in doing so. It must be said that Grand Seiko has exercised admirable restraint in downsizing its diver. Even though the caliber can fit a 37mm case, the key consideration for the brand is clearly not how small, but how to hit the sweet spot, a Goldilocks zone that accounts for legibility, wearability and size.

“Usability and legibility were always critical considerations,” Sakai adds. “We constantly asked ourselves: Is the bezel intuitive to turn? Is the crown easy to use? Is the dial easy to read in darkness? Can the clasp be operated naturally?”

 

The answer to all of the above is a resounding yes. In place of the dot markers of the Diver 200m, here, prominent block indexes run uninterrupted around the dial. Unlike in the former, there is no added distraction of a date window at 3 o’clock. Indexes, hands and bezel are all generously filled with Lumibrite for maximum legibility in the deep. The 12 o’clock marker bears a distinctive shape, as do the hour and minute hands to ensure an easy time check. The power reserve indicator is shifted down, from 9 o’clock to 7 o’clock, and inverted, which frees up the center of the dial. As in all Grand Seiko divers, its rotating bezel can be disassembled at the component level, which makes for easy servicing and hassle-free maintenance in the long run.

 

To doubly ensure comfort and ease of wear between land and sea, the Ushio 300 Diver features a new bracelet with locking extension clasp with micro-adjustment. This allows for a total of 24mm of adjustment; 18mm for the foldout extension that’s designed for wearing over a diving suit and 6mm for the micro-adjustment. The clasp itself also features a clever locking design: slide the GS logo up to reveal a red line below, which shows that it has been unlocked, and simply push the triggers to open the clasp. This little detail helps to ensure that the clasp does not come undone by accident, especially underwater. The same rationale applies for the crown tube, which is marked in red to remind one to screw the crown back down after winding.

 

Both the case and bracelet are crafted from Grand Seiko’s proprietary high-intensity titanium, which is roughly 30 percent lighter than stainless steel. Thanks to this, the watch weighs a mere 122g, equivalent to two large eggs. But, make no mistake, it is as tough as Grade 5 titanium.

 

The Ushio Dial

Like its 2023 predecessor, the blue dial draws inspiration from the ocean, mirroring the shimmering play of light you’ll see when diving in its depths. The green dial, meanwhile, references the shifting sea green of shallow coastal water. Sakai explains, “Japan is blessed with abundant marine resources, where nature and people have long coexisted. The Ushio dial pattern does not represent a specific location, but rather the seas surrounding the Japanese archipelago and the changing character of its waters.”

 

The technique used to create the wave motif on the dials is like that used in 2023’s SLGA019, known amongst enthusiasts as “Lake Suwa.” Sakai shares, “We studied how water moves and worked closely with craftsmen in Shiojiri on this.” A master mold was hammered and Grand Seiko created a total of 10 patterns.

“Calm waters became the dial pattern for Lake Suwa and rough waves were used for Ushio,” he elaborates.

“For a diver’s watch, the dial can’t be too shiny; it will be hard to see. So the Ushio dial has a matte finish while the Lake Suwa dial [in the SLGA019] keeps a glossy layer, giving it a fresh, clear look.”

 

For 2026, both blue and green dials feature a gradient fumé effect that shifts from dark, almost black, at the edges to a lighter tone towards the center. The execution, however, differs for both.

 

In the blue iteration, a lacquer finishing is used to enhance the different shades of blue on the dial. “It expresses the experience of diving into deeper waters, where light gradually fades as one descends into the ocean,” Sakai says. For the green dial, Grand Seiko tapped its patented dial-coating process known as Optical Multilayer Coating in addition to a gradation lacquer finishing. Thanks to these translucent layers, the Ushio wave-like motif is more visible and vivid, with distinct gradation from the dense green on the outer rim of dial to the shimmery jade green at the center. The color changes in the light and, depending on the angle, recalls the impression of sunlight rippling across shallow waters.

The technology relies on a physical vapor deposition process that was previously used in 2024’s 20th anniversary limited edition, the SBGC275, which featured an intricate “lion’s mane” pattern that shifted with the light and angle. Here, several ultra thin layers of nanoscale film are deposited on the dial surface to enhance both the color and texture of the wave motif. As a result, the graduation of colors on the green dial morphs from dark green, almost black around the fringes, to deep green and then a shifting silvery tone at the center.

Says Sakai, “Different techniques were used for each dial in order to recreate the intended scene and achieve the optimal color expression.”

 

The overall effect for both is subtle, stunning and, of course, best admired on land than in watery depths. Indeed, the Ushio dial is very much in keeping with Grand Seiko’s mastery of dial making, evident throughout its various collections.

 

Form, Function and The Language of Nature

The Ushio 300 Diver is a keen reminder that, at Grand Seiko, form and function are one and the same. Grand Seiko’s pursuit of chronometric precision has progressed alongside its distinct aesthetic sensibility, one that is evidently rooted in the brand’s Japanese heritage and appreciation of nature. While the first is realized in its high-beat calibers and Spring Drive movements, the latter has evolved into a defining design language beautifully expressed on its dials, where nature forms the source of inspiration. The ensuing tension between mechanical rigor and nature-inspired beauty drove the appeal of Grand Seiko in its most iconic pieces such as the SBGA211 “Snowflake” and SLGH005 “White Birch.”

 

It is now most eloquently encapsulated in the Ushio 300 Diver.

 

“At Grand Seiko, we wanted our diver’s watch to not only be a high-performance diving instrument, but also a luxury sports watch suitable for everyday wear,” Sakai explains. “At the same time, we clearly recognized the growing demand for more compact and wearable case sizes in the market.

 

“Thanks to the development of the new U.F.A. caliber and its more compact architecture, we were finally able to realize this vision while maintaining the functionality, robustness and comfort expected of a Grand Seiko diver.”
