Five to Watch at The US Open (And Their Watches)

In the world of top level tennis, much like the golfing majors, it’s all about the grand slams. These are the ones the players want to compete in and win and the ones the spectators must spend days queuing for. The fourth and final of the year, the US Open gets under way on Monday (August 28) in the Big Apple. But two questions that keep me up at night before global sporting events are; who’s in the running? And what the hell do they wear on the wrist (on and off the court!).

Top flight tennis this year has been as hard to predict as getting a runny yolk or not with your eggs royale. Just when you thought Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka were starting to pull away, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal turn the tables. Despite a hip injury, Andy Murray is likely to feature. But Nadal will come into the tournament as world number one (for the first time in over three years).

Djokovic and Wawrinka are both out with injury, which has left the door wide open for Federer and Nadal. This year, Federer won his fifth Australian Open and his eighth Wimbledon title (not bad for an old fella), while Nadal took home his record-extending 10th French.

My wildcard pick is Alexander Zverev. The 20-year-old German has won five tournament victories on tour this year, including the Italian Open (over Djokovic) and Canadian Open (over Federer), making him the youngest player to take consecutive Masters 1000 titles since Nadal, at 18. One can only imagine he is enjoying life at the minute.

He didn’t make it onto the list, but Nick Kyrgios, the fiery youngster from Australia deserves an honourable mention. I have to confess, no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t find the man wearing a watch. Surely a guy with the type of talent and charisma he possesses deserves a watch deal. Let’s make it happen.

Enough of that stuff, let’s get down to business, here are my five to watch and their watches for this year’s US Open:
