Chanel Introduces the Interstellar J12 Eclipse Box Set

At Watches & Wonders 2023, Parisian fashion house and watchmaker Chanel unveils an intriguing collection of watches that boldly reimagines its signature models, ranging from Boy.Friend to J12.

Named the Interstellar capsule collection, Chanel’s latest watches are crafted from a blend of black or white ceramic and diamonds, resulting in a striking two-tone effect. However, what sets these watches apart is the imaginative patterns in their design, making them unusually captivating. And one of the most intriguing models is the J12 Eclipse Box Set, which comprises seven unique watches.

J12 Eclipse Box Set

The Low-Down

Three years ago, Chanel released the J12 Paradoxe with a case made of a distinctive blend of white and black ceramic, vertically split in a one-quarter ratio. Now, Chanel has expanded upon this concept with a collection of seven watches that use the same blend of materials to create timepieces that transition from fully white to fully black in gradual steps, resembling the timelapse of an eclipse. The new J12 Eclipse Box Set is a unique creation, with each piece being a one-off example and sold together as a set.

To achieve a seamless colour transition within the box set, Chanel has introduced three new models with a two-tone bracelet, a new feature for the J12 line as the mix of materials were previously reserved for the case. Two of the models introduce a one-third split, where one row of the bracelet links is made of a contrasting material, unlike the earlier J12 Paradoxe which only had a monotone bracelet. The third new model is even more captivating, with its centre link split into two halves, each made from a different colour of ceramic.

A one-of-a-kind creation for a lucky Chanel enthusiast

Finally, Chanel has given the dial a fresh look by departing from their signature Arabic numeral hour markers. Instead, the brand has opted for baguette-cut white or black ceramic, arranged in a circular pattern that resembles high-jewellery watches with a diamond dial. Continuing the two-tone theme, the bezel displays the same mix of baguette-cut ceramic cubes as the dial. The result is a watch that is both chic and refined, yet understated without the sparkle of precious stones.

J12 Spatiotemporal

While the J12 Eclipse Box Set is a unique creation, there are other similar models that are relatively more accessible. One such example is the J12 Spatiotemporal pair, which also incorporate a two-tone combination of materials on the case and bracelet, with a further twist. Unlike the Eclipse Box Set’s vertical split, the J12 Spatiotemporal’s split of materials follows the circular shape of the dial. This means that only one side of the bracelet is two-tone to match the one-quarter division of the dial. Additionally, the J12 Spatiotemporal features baguette-cut diamonds instead of white ceramic cubes, giving it a more dynamic look that matches the dramatic division of the dial. The J12 Spatiotemporal is a limited edition with only 12 pieces in each iteration.

J12 Cybernetic

Another model with an asymmetric mix of materials is the J12 Cybernetic, which has a contemporary feel with a graphic interpretation on the dial, bezel, and case. In fact, the case is asymmetrical, with one side crafted with an angular shape in a pixelated motif, giving it a quirky and intriguing appearance. The pixelated motif is available in either ceramic or lavish diamonds, and each model is a limited edition of 55 pieces.

IMHO

The Interstellar mechanical watches are all equipped with proprietary or in-house movements, providing a solid technical foundation. However, the standout feature of the new collection is undoubtedly the design. It’s interesting to see a fashion house explore creativity in serious watchmaking, and the Interstellar collection is a great example of that. With a successful blend of both technical and aesthetic elements, the Interstellar watches are easily one of the highlights of the fair.
