Sizes and styling crafted with elegance in mind
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Royal Oak Offshore (ROO), Audemars Piguet has unveiled five mid-sized, 37 mm models specifically with styling catered to the ladies. Reflecting the brand’s characteristic bold, creative, and luxurious style, the latest Offshores are available in a range of materials and styles, ensuring there is something to suit every taste.

The first model of the collection is also the only time-only watch in this release, the Royal Oak Offshore Music Edition, featuring a 37 mm black ceramic case. Originally introduced last year to celebrate its association with various artists as brand ambassadors, the Music Edition showcases a rainbow-coloured dial with an equaliser pattern, giving it an asymmetrical design unlike the typical geometrical tapesserie dial. Of interest, The Music Edition departs from the typical Royal Oak design by featuring an uncluttered dial without complications – omitting a date display – allowing for an uninterrupted pattern.

While the original Music Edition was primarily offered in two sizes, namely 37 mm and 43 mm, the black ceramic version was only available in the larger case size, leaving out the 37 mm model. However, this has finally changed with the latest launch. Notably, alongside the new watch, a debut strap with a mosaic pattern is introduced to complement the dial. Although a simple accessory, it has a significant impact on completing the overall look.

Inside the watch is the cal. 5909, a no-date version of the cal. 5900 that was introduced in the 37 mm Royal Oak references last year. The cal. 5909 offers the same 60 hours power reserve as its predecessor, the cal. 3120, while operating at a higher frequency and boasting a thinner profile.

Alongside the time-only Music Edition, there are four new ROO Chronograph models available in the same 37 mm case. However, in contrast to the understated black-on-black appearance of the Music Edition, the Chronograph models feature a more extravagant design, all of which include gem-set bezels.

The new ROO Chronograph 37 mm is available in three materials, with the first version featuring a steel case and a salmon dial. Enhancing its elegance, the watch is adorned with a princess-cut diamond bezel, imparting a radiant touch without overwhelming the overall palette, as the design avoids strong contrasts.

The watch also comes in another variant with a rose gold case and a light blue dial, which also features princess-cut diamonds on the bezel. With its livelier colour palette and vibrant appearance, it presents a noticeable contrast to the steel model mentioned earlier.

The most striking versions, however, are the “rainbow” pair available in pink or yellow gold. The yellow gold model is complemented by a dark blue dial, creating a warm appearance that complements the sapphire gradient bezel. Finally, the pink gold model features a black dial, making it the most striking variant in this collection.

It’s worth noting that the yellow gold model’s bezel includes gemstones in yellow, green, and blue colours, harmonising with the warm tone of the case and blue dial. In contrast, the pink gold model offers greater flexibility in colour combinations and contrast, featuring a full range of rainbow colours on the bezel to complement the pink gold case and black dial.

The new quartet of ROO Chronograph 37 mm models is equipped with the cal. 2385 movement, which has been a long-standing choice for Audemars Piguet’s chronograph watches. Derived from the Frederic Piguet cal. 1185, the cal. 2385 is a non-inhouse movement and is being phased out in favour of the cal. 4401 introduced in 2019. However, the cal. 2385 is still used in smaller chronographs due to the larger size of the cal. 4401 movement. Nonetheless, the cal. 2385 remains a solid chronograph movement, incorporating a vertical clutch and a column wheel, essential features for high-end automatic chronographs.

One notable feature of the ROO Chronograph 37 mm is that all the registers are of the same size, unlike most AP watches with the same cal. 2385, where the small seconds register at six o’clock is typically smaller. This balanced sizing of the registers gives the watch a more harmonious appearance, aligning it with other AP watches equipped with in-house chronograph movements.
