Introducing the Rainbow Bright Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Skeleton 6-15

Recognized for its vintage dive watch remakes infused with vibrant colour accents, Zodiac has just unveiled its latest creation, the Super Sea Wolf Skeleton 6-15.This release marks two firsts for the brand: a skeletonized dial and a bezel adorned with a rainbow of colours.

The Low-Down

Zodiac has a long-standing history of manufacturing dive watches, beginning in 1953 with the introduction of the Sea Wolf. Over time, Zodiac continued to refine its dive watches, culminating in the Super Sea Wolf of the 1970s, which had a depth rating of 750m and was favoured by distinguished clients such as the Navy SEALs.

Since reviving its signature dive watch in 2015, Zodiac has made a habit of incorporating cheerful colours into its timepieces. Now, tapping into the current trend of rainbow aesthetics, the brand is venturing into new territory with a “rainbow” bezel – a first for the brand. The bezel insert, topped with a mineral crystal, is likely made of metal coated in vibrant colours. Notably, the movement ring at the back is adorned in a matching rainbow palette to mirror the front.

While the bezel’s rainbow palette is certainly eye-catching, the highlight of the watch lies in its skeletonised movement, which is also a first for the brand. The Super Sea Wolf Skeleton is powered by the STP 6-15, an upgraded and skeletonized version of the ETA 2824 movement. The movement is made by Swiss Technology Production (STP), which is owned by Fossil, the parent company of Zodiac. The STP 6-15 boasts a power reserve of 44 hours, slightly longer than the original’s 38 hours, though it is still shorter than the new industry standard of three days power reserve for a new calibre.

The skeletonized movement is cleverly coloured to give the complex layout a more organised appearance. For instance, the dark-coloured bridges provide the watch with more contrast and a more striking appearance than a movement entirely in standard silver colour. Additionally, I appreciate the harmony between the front and back of the watch, exemplified by the blue chapter ring echoed by a blue rotor.

IMHO

The new Super Sea Wolf manages to combine many fashionable elements into one watch, including a rainbow bezel, skeleton movement, and five-link bracelet, without looking overly busy. Importantly, despite the extravagant style, the watch retains all of its best qualities, including a 200m water resistance and a relatively affordable price tag of under USD 2,000.
