Roger Dubuis do not allow themselves to be limited by watch design — they could take the easy way out and do what is accepted, but they thrive on the challenge of technical adversity, and the results speak for themselves. This concept now appears in the form of the RD108SQ calibre, with a fresh aesthetic and a range of technical enhancements that deliver an uncompromising blend of hard-hitting visual impact and technical performance.

The Excalibur Double Flying Tourbillon is a brand icon, a design code that is continually being rewritten. It speaks to the maison’s unique outlook on watchmaking in several important ways. It’s a watch that hides nothing. Everything is on show. From the endlessly whirling tourbillons to the three-dimensional architecture which creates a dynamic, voluminous aesthetic and a great sense of depth.

From the bridges to the balance, the inner beauty of this watch is clearly on display, and the wearer can enjoy it all. This openness leads to another crucial aspect of the watch’s design. Central to the enduring appeal of this design is the fact that it’s driven by supreme technical expertise. Roger Dubuis is an accomplished, integrated manufacture, capable of mastering the most complex processes and materials. When your watch calibre looks this good, why not show it off? Pride in their technical expertise is what drives Roger Dubuis to open, skeleton designs.

To best take in these fresh aesthetics and technical enhancements, it’s best to look at the profile. The shape of the case has been altered, with longer, smoother and more sophisticated lines at play, which still retain the excessive essence of Roger Dubuis. The lugs are more aggressively shaped, as is the crown guard. The iconic notches on the bezel and crown are still there, deeper and more sculptural than ever before, thanks to the refined design with a cut tip.

The end result of using titanium and cobalt to form the parts of the cage of the two tourbillons leads to lighter regulating organs and also heightened anti-magnetic properties

The spirit of Hyper Horology is front and center on the calibre. The three-dimensional architecture of the signature calibre has also been enhanced. You can see it clearly on the levitating star, the brand’s iconic symbol which has now broken free from the physical constraints of the barrel. Now the star is free to work on it its own. It sits above the rest of the caliber, between the movement plate and under the flange. This new style star adds even more depth and character into the calibre, even crossing over other movement bridges for a multi-levelled, dynamic look. Thanks to the fine angles and exceptional polishes, it shines even brighter than before.

The Excalibur Double Flying Tourbillon’s improvements go beyond the modern finishes and strong aesthetics of straight lines. Power reserve has been increased to 72 hours; anti-magnetic properties have been improved. The overall tourbillon weight has been reduced by 16 per cent, thanks to the use of two non-magnetic materials. The lower section in in super-light titanium, and the upper tourbillon cage is in cobalt chrome. In addition to keeping the weight down, these new materials improve the watch’s mechanical properties and enable some truly stunning mirror polishing. And wearers are sure to appreciate the improved strap sizing, allowing members of this particular Roger Dubuis tribe exceptional comfort.
