Patek Philippe Introduces the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Chronograph Ref. 5924G

This Watches & Wonders, Patek Philippe has unveiled a slew of novelties including two new entirely new references: the Calatrava Travel Time Ref. 5224R and Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Chronograph Reference 5924G. The ref. 5924G marks the first time that a chronograph has been executed in the style of the Pilot line, combining a vertically coupled flyback chronograph, a dual-time zone function and an analog date that is synchronized with local time.

Executed in white gold with either a blue-gray sunburst dial or a khaki green lacquered dial, the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Chronograph measures 42mm wide just like the Pilot Travel Time ref. 5524 and 13.05mm in height. Both versions are unusual and distinctive, particularly in the context of vintage, aviator-inspired dials that are typically of a darker colour for high contrast and no-nonsense legibility. Both dials feature white gold applied numerals and hands filled with luminescent coating.

Powering the watches is the self-winding CH 28-520 C FUS, the same movement in the Nautilus ref. 5990. The movement combines the dual time mechanism, with its bidirectional adjustment feature and day-and-night indicators, first seen in its current iteration in the Aquanaut Travel Time Ref. 5164A in 2011 with the vertical-coupled flyback chronograph that made its debut in the ref. 5980 in 2006. At 12 o’ clock is the analog date display that has been geared to local time while a single-elapsed chronograph minutes counter is positioned at six o’clock with two circular apertures at three and nine o’clock that indicate day or night for each time zone.

Notably, by doing away with the running seconds counter at six o’clock, the movement is able to adopt the most optimal format of a vertical coupling mechanism in that the fourth wheel is integrated in the vertical clutch assembly at the centre of the movement with no additional gears necessary to re-locate the seconds to a sub-dial. This realises the true merits of a vertical coupling system, allowing the chronograph to function at its best with negligible effect on amplitude as the clutch and chronograph seconds wheel are within the power flow of the gear train, making it particularly suited for such a dial design as it enables the use of the chronograph seconds as an active running seconds with no amplitude loss.
