Jacob & Co. Bugatti Tourbillon Sapphire Crystal: The Transparent Hypercar
While other watchmakers might refer to automotive engineering by way of their design aesthetics, such as evoking the idea of a car’s dashboard through dial typography, when it comes to Jacob Arabo’s house, the approach is, shall we, say, a bit more literal.
The defining evolution of the Bugatti Tourbillon Sapphire Crystal is the case itself. Forged entirely from sapphire for the first time, it represents the most significant technical and visual advancement within the Bugatti collection. Measuring 55 x 44mm and cut entirely from solid sapphire – corundum, to give it its chemical name – it represents a complete rethinking of what a watch case can be. The caseback, caseband and upper bezel each start life as a full block of sapphire, and each case requires over 800 hours of intensive machining to realise.
Sapphire ranks 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, surpassed only by diamond and select industrial ceramics. It is one of the hardest materials in the world (only diamonds and some kinds of industrial ceramics are harder) so it is fiendishly challenging to work with. Too slow, the material resists. Too fast, it cracks.
Within that transparent architecture sits a V16 engine block that has always been a signature of the piece – an automaton carved from a single block of sapphire into which 16 cylinders have been drilled, housing 16 titanium pistons driven by a single-axis crankshaft. It is among the most elaborate and delicate watch components ever conceived. Where previous versions revealed elements of the astonishing interior selectively, the new sapphire crystal case leaves nothing to the imagination.
And what Jacob & Co. is showcasing inside this extraordinary sapphire creation is Calibre JCAM55, one of the most architecturally ambitious movements in modern independent watchmaking, a miniature depiction of a V16 engine block. When the pusher integrated into the crown is engaged, all the 16 pistons fire in sequence for a 20-second animation. It is movement that is also a kinetic spectacle. And is pure Jacob & Co.
The dial architecture mirrors the instrument cluster of the Bugatti hypercar it references: a flying tourbillon beating at 30 seconds – Jacob & Co.’ fastest ever to date, chosen as a tribute to the car’s 276mph top speed – sits to the left, while a subdial at right displays both the movement’s 80-hour power reserve and the automaton’s capacity for 20 consecutive animation sequences from a single wind. At centre, the hours and minutes are rendered as retrograde displays, each hand sweeping a 270-degree arc before snapping back to zero, a direct interpretive translation of the car’s RPM counter.
The first series comprises just two unique pieces. One is in Jacob & Co.’s signature green; one in what Jacob Arabo describes as his favourite baby blue, with the subdials, exhaust manifolds finished in matching PVD and the rubber strap matching the the same hue.
The crown, combining metal and sapphire with inner knurling for enhanced handling, functions as both a winding mechanism and a time-setting tool via a flip-out bow integrated into the caseback.
At $1.2 million and two unique pieces in total, the Bugatti Tourbillon Sapphire Crystal occupies a pretty exclusive category like its inspiration, the Bugatti hypercar. The ultimate hypercar inspired watch, with all its incredible details visible from every angle.
