Piaget introduced its foray into sport-chic integrated bracelet watches with the Piaget Polo S, all the way back in 2016. It reimagined what a Piaget classic, namely the classic Polo of 1979, could look like in a contemporary form fit for the 21st century.
The watch was brought to market in both a time with date version and a chronograph version with date. At launch the watch was available with dials in white, grey and Piaget’s signature blue. Over the course of the years, the maison has added several other dial options including variations in rose gold and decorated with diamonds.
The watch has, no doubt, held its own ground as Piaget’s modern interpretation of the 80s icon that was the original Polo, and a viable entry into the world of sport-chic integrated bracelet watches. Therein, it was only a matter of time before the watch was brought deeper into Piaget’s fold with an ultra-thin variation.
Enter the Piaget Polo Skeleton. While the watch is not exactly within the realms of ultra-thin that Piaget typically boasts, it does present refinements that points the Polo in that assured direction.=
Firstly, the 42mm Piaget Polo Skeleton now measures in at a thickness of just 6.5mm. A reduction of about 30% compared to the existing steel time-only watch. This refinement had to be made in order to create the appropriate vessel to carry the newly minted 1200S1 self-winding caliber.
The thing to understand is that the movement was already part of Piaget’s stable as the 1200P at 2.3mm thickness, marked under their family of ultra-thin calibers. A skeleton version of this also exists as the 1200S at a thickness of 2.4mm. Now the 1200S was feat for Piaget as the skeletonization process required bridges such as the one for the hour wheel to be reduced down to a width of 0.11mm, at its most extreme. All this in order for the movement to be retained within Piaget’s family of ultra-thin movements.
The evolved 1200S1 used for the Piaget Polo Skeleton maintains all of its predecessor’s qualities, and while maintaining the thickness of 2.4mm, but the movement as we can see in the watch, has now been given a PVD treatment for Piaget’s signature blue on the bridges or a slate gray finish for a stealthier take.
The Piaget Polo Skeleton is supplied with a steel bracelet, featuring the maison’s interchangeability feature, which allows for easy swapping with an alligator strap.
