Introducing the new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Single Flying Tourbillon

The Low-Down

Roger Dubuis has given their famous (or is that infamous) Excalibur Single Flying Tourbillon a thorough going over, updating the case and movement, deploying a new gold alloy and even making diamonds glow bright like rainbows. Impressive stuff.

IMHO

The immediate form of the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Single Flying Tourbillon is familiar thanks to the distinctive star-shaped bridges on the open-worked dial and the aggressive lines of the case and deeply notched bezel. Every millimetre of this watch is, as Roger Dubuis says, Hyper Horology.

Roger Dubuis has had an Excalibur Single Flying Tourbillon in the collection for a while now, but these new models are completely overhauled. The case is thinner and has cleaner, more striking lines. At 42mm across and 12.7mm tall, the proportions, especially with the curvy profile and wrist-hugging strap, are good. Water resistance is solid too at 100m, meaning that if you’ve got enough flex to make a tourbillon your daily wearer, the Excalibur Single Flying Tourbillon is up to the task. This new case is offered in three new versions, each limited to only 88 models. There’s dark grey DLC titanium, white gold and a new material called Eon Gold, a proprietary alloy of pink gold.

The tourbillon in the new edition is made with a titanium lower cage and a mirror-polished cobalt chrome upper cage, reducing the overall weight.

The movement got a makeover too. The Poinçon de Genève marked RD512SQ is quite a looker — the Roger Dubuis star now seemingly floats above the barrel, and the notched motif so prominent on the bezel is worked onto the hands, flange and even the tourbillon cage. Speaking of cages, the tourbillon is now made with a titanium lower cage and a mirror-polished cobalt chrome upper cage, reducing the overall weight. Power reserve is improved to 72 hours.

But if these new models were a little too understated for your tastes, how about a glow-up? Limited to just eight pieces, the Excalibur Glow Me Up! is a stunning new single flying tourbillon with a bezel set with 60 baguette-cut diamonds. Only, before the diamonds were set, the grooves in which they were set were filled with rainbow-hued Super-Luminova, a look echoed on the star-bridges and angles of the movement. Stunning, day and night.
