The Hublot Arsham Droplet is the Artistic Pocket Watch No One Saw Coming

Hublot has the capacity to be a remarkably exciting and innovative brand, and it’s at its best when it’s thinking not just out of the box but also out of the confines of its familiar Big Bang design language. Typically, this sort of design comes when Hublot is challenged and inspired by external creative partners. Sang Bleu, Richard Orlinski and Samuel Ross are all examples of exceptional partnerships that allow Hublot to create and explore in ways we seldom see from major brands.

The latest visionary creative to team up with the Nyon-based maker is contemporary artist Daniel Arsham. Best known for his series of ‘future relics’ — artfully aged representations of everyday objects, seen through the lens of some sort of dystopian archeological dig site. Having said that, the Hublot Arsham Droplet offers us a more streamlined vision of Arsham’s future — a 21st century reimagining of the pocket watch.

The biomorphic-inspired timekeeper is, at its heart, an open-worked titanium teardrop housing the always impressive Meca-10 movement — realised in a cool grey palette with Arhsam green highlights that extend to the rubber bumpers around the pleasingly tactile device. It’s makes quite a presence in the pocket too, at 73.2mm long by 52.6mm wide and 22.5mm thick. Interestingly enough, it doesn’y just have to be hidden away in the pocket, it can be worn as a pendant or form the centrepiece of a table clock — a versatility made possible thanks to Hublot’s One Click system.

The pocket watch is constructed from titanium, rubber, and sapphire crystal, affixed with two titanium chains.

Regarding this unconventional object, Daniel Arsham says, “The Arsham Droplet is a true testament to the power of collaboration. By combining Hublot’s technical expertise with my own artistic vision, we have created a timepiece that transcends the traditional pocket watch, blending the past, present and future in a captivating and unexpected way.”

Unexpected is the operative word — I don’t think anyone had this on their 2024 horological bingo card. Unexpected, but also brilliant. I hope this marks the beginning of a fertile creative partnership between the non-conformist watchmaker and one of the biggest artists working today.
