Franck Muller Teams Up with Ryoko Kaneta for a Dragon-Themed Cintrée Curvex

Franck Muller Unveils the Cintrée Curvex Ryoko Kaneta Dragon.
Last month, we highlighted all the dragon-themed watches decorated with métiers d’art techniques. However, among those delicate designs, there are simpler yet equally fascinating timepieces in concept, and Franck Muller’s take on a dragon-themed watch falls into this category. Resulting from a collaboration with Japanese artist Ryoko Kaneta, the Cintrée Curvex Ryoko Kaneta Dragon Limited Edition is an unexpectedly charming timepiece for the Chinese Year of the Dragon.

Stylized dragon

While many dragon-themed watches from prominent brands adhere to traditional styles – utilizing techniques like enamel or engraving to depict dragons in the manner of ancient China – Franck Muller has taken a distinct approach. Instead of featuring a prominent dragon figure at the center of the dial, which is the common choice among most watchmakers, it has opted for a stylized dragon.

To ensure the stylized dragon is both appealing and intriguing, Franck Muller collaborated with Japanese artist Ryoko Kaneta to create something innovative. In fact, it’s so “new” that at first glance, it doesn’t even resemble a dragon. The dial showcases 12 doll-like figures, typical of Ms. Kaneta’s style, each sporting a tail reminiscent of that of a dragon. This depiction or interpretation clearly doesn’t aim to faithfully represent how Chinese culture depicts dragons – that’s not the intention of this watch at all – so it may not appeal to those seeking traditional designs. However, it will be perfect for enthusiasts of Japanese art or for those who simply desire something more unconventional.

Refreshing palette

What’s notable about this watch is that it manages to combine a few different styles but still appears harmonious. There’s just the right amount of complementary details, as well as subtle contrasts to make it visually interesting.

Let’s begin with those elements that are similar. The figures are undeniably cute, youthful in style, and they are complemented by the turquoise blue dial, which is a refreshing and fashionable color. Both aspects exude modernity and chicness, perfectly complementing each other.

However, the dial also features a stamped guilloche pattern, which immediately evokes a classical aesthetic, as does the Cintrée Curvex itself. Yet, these more classical elements don’t feel out of place. They are executed with just enough style to provide contrast without overwhelming the overall design. Perhaps one reason why these contrasts are integrated well is the presence of Arabic numeral hour markers. The font is intriguing – it possesses a sense of classicism while still being playful and modern.

Movement

Although the watch is a basic time-only piece, the movement within is actually an in-house creation, much like many of the brand’s movements. While some may bear similarities to existing, well-known calibers, Franck Muller has redesigned and produced them themselves. The MVT FM 2536-SC has a modest power reserve of only 42 hours. However, it is not overly bulky, resulting in an overall case height of just 9.35 mm. This slim profile is essential for maintaining the elegant case shape without appearing awkward.
