Boodles Marks Time with Patek Philippe

To celebrate 220 years in business, celebrated retailer Boodles has collaborated with Patek Philippe in the creation of a special edition of the Ref. 5230G-012 self-winding World Time model. The Patek Philippe World Time Special Series will include a detail in pink in tribute to Boodles’ brand colour, with the number “220” engraved on the back of the timepiece.

Ref. 5230G-012, with self-winding Calibre 240 HU, is a highly-coveted model appreciated by frequent flyers and collectors. This adaptation features a reference to Boodles’ birthplace of Liverpool as one of the 24 time zones, replacing London for this exclusive model. The city’s name will be highlighted in pink. Patek’s world time editions established the genre 80 years ago, providing the wearer with the ability to read 24 major time zones and to adjust the time with a single activation on a pusher, without affecting the rate accuracy and precision of the movement.

In Boodles’ limited commemorative release, edition, Liverpool “sits proudly at the top of the dial to reflect both, the city’s illustrious past as a gateway to the globe and also the foundation of Boodle & Dunthorne there in 1798.” As this model has an inherent “vintage feel” with monochrome colours, a black ebony lacquered dial, set in white gold with a matte black alligator-leather strap, the timepiece evokes a sense of history.

Its centre features hand-guilloché’d basket weave motif, inspired by a pocket watch on display at the Patek Philippe Museum Ref. P-1630. Water resistant to 30m, the 38.5mm watch is fitted with a hand-stitched, matte black alligator leather strap with square scales, , with fold over clasp. The timepiece will be offered in 18 carat white gold in a strictly limited series of just 50 pieces.

It is known that both Antoine Norbert de Patek, founder of Patek Philippe, and Boodles ancestor and watchmaker William Wainwright, were present in Liverpool in the 1850s. The company speculates, “Who knows if these two fellow craftsmen may have encountered each other? The full story remains a mystery… What we do know is that the two businesses prospered, before coming together over a century later as the partners that they remain today. Today, in 2018, Liverpool is boldly positioned on the Patek Philippe World Time Special Series Ref. 5230G-012 in honour of William Wainwright, Jean Adrien Philippe and Antoine Norbert de Patek.”

Says Boodles Managing Director Michael Wainwright, “We’ve always liked doing things differently. When Patek Philippe offered to help us celebrate 220 years of Boodles, we jumped at the chance to have fun creating something special for our customers. The result is this remarkable World Time. We believe it’s the first to see Liverpool ousting London as Britain’s ‘time capital’.”

Patek Philippe President Thierry Stern adds: “This is a remarkable milestone for Boodles who, like us, has strong core values and demonstrate these when serving their customers. We are proud to be part of their celebrations, creating this Special Series of 50 watches for them.”

Lest you think this watch will seduce only lovers of Patek Philippe world timers or who happen to be Boodles’ most devoted customers, there are well-heeled fans of a certain rock band who, too, covet anything with a Mersey connection. Boodles – Beatles? Not that far a stretch.
