If I’m being honest, I’ve always been an ambitious chap. For years I wanted to go to Oxbridge, to follow in my father’s footsteps and to be part of an incredible establishment. I went on to study medieval literature at Oxford. Evidently, I like old things and I’m a sucker for bastions of tradition. I’m a thoroughly nostalgic person and I suppose that’s why I’m so attracted to the glamour of old-school menswear.
My penchant for menswear was most informed by my love of jazz. Quite apart from the energy, vibrancy and glamour of the genre, I was drawn to the style of jazz’s greats. Everyone from The Rat Pack to Miles Davis, this developed into a love of tailoring and of Jazz Age style in particular. Which to this day is an aesthetic I still try to refer to in my dress – my tailor Edward Sexton is a marvellous help with this.
I also have a TAG Heuer 2000 Chronograph from the early-1980s that is perfect for more casual wardrobe days. It was my father’s and he gave it to me on my 16th birthday so I’m hugely attached to it. My ex-girlfriend’s father generously gifted me a fabulous antique silver half-hunter pocket watch together with a chain and fob for my 21st – it’s my pride and joy. I wear a lot of three-piece suits and no waistcoat is complete without a chain and watch. I love how robust it is – and it’s heavy enough to knock a man out, should I so choose.”
