Seiko’s entry-level into the world of mechanical watches, the Seiko 5 Sports family, goes unremarked a lot of the time. Part of the reason is that it simply does what it does well, and with no fuss. Looking for a reliable sports watch that won’t break the bank? Try Seiko 5 Sports. Well, we think this new duo, HDB001K and HBD002K, are worth talking about.

At first glance, it’s clear what these watches are about — a no-fuss take on the tool GMT that follows a clear, and much-loved, formula. Fixed steel bezel, orange second hour hand, utilitarian design language and no nonsense, anywhere.

There’s a lot to love here. From the three hour scales (24 hour on the bezel, and both 12 and 24-hour read outs on the dial) to the 39.4mm case with a crown at three and (one of my personal favourite design features) drilled lugs, this watch is certainly honouring its outdoorsy aesthetic. It’s also delivering on the specs side — 100m of water resistance, luminous markers, brushed finishes aplenty and a five-link bracelet make this an everyday wearer that doesn’t overwhelm the wrist.

Really though, it’s the two dial options that cement the appeal here. HDB001K has a warm green dial, really leaning into the exploration/travel vibe. It contrasts beautifully with the orange highlights and offers what I think is a classical take on a military-adjacent travel watch. HDB002K offers something else. The dial is a warm ivory tone, which not only pairs well with the orange, but evokes certain aged neo-vintage examples of another popular steel GMT. In its ivory guise, the Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT feels more stylish, like it’s asking to be paired with some vintage leather.

On the movement front, we’re looking at the 4R34, a caller-style GMT offering 41 hours of power reserve, a 3-Hz rate and a broad range of accuracy, between -34 to +45 seconds per day, though it must be said Seiko often perform better IRL than on paper when it comes to accuracy.

However you want to slice it, this pair of GMTs offers a pile of fun, for not a pile of cash, and they’re perfect for summer.
