King Seiko VANAC: A New Angle

More than 50 years after VANAC first revealed King Seiko’s adventurous side, its modern successor takes another step forward. A striking new dial joins a titanium case and bracelet that make one of Seiko’s boldest contemporary designs considerably lighter on the wrist.

There is more than one way to bring back an old watch. The simplest is to make it again. Reproduce the look and feel, improving the movement and materials where current expectations demand it. Done well, the result can be almost indistinguishable from something that left the factory half a century earlier. King Seiko VANAC took a different route.

When Seiko revived the name in 2025, it did not recreate a particular vintage reference. Instead, it returned to the thinking behind some of the most unconventional watches in King Seiko’s history and asked what the same philosophy might produce more than 50 years later. The result was an angular, unmistakably modern sports watch with a bracelet designed to flow seamlessly from the case, a new movement and a design inspired by the Tokyo skyline.

A year later, King Seiko VANAC is evolving again. Three new versions retain the architecture and movement of the reborn watch, but introduce titanium cases and bracelets, along with a new dial design.

The Other Side Of King Seiko

VANAC first appeared in 1972, but the King Seiko name goes back to 1961. It became one of Seiko’s most important high-end names, associated with precise mechanical movements and the clean, sharp case designs that helped establish a distinctively Japanese approach to watchmaking.

By the early 1970s, however, the design landscape had changed. Clothes were louder, cars more angular and watchmakers increasingly willing to experiment with shapes and colors. King Seiko joined in with VANAC.

The watches from the 1970s combined vivid dials with striking multifaceted cases. The original watches show just how far Seiko was prepared to push the idea. Purple, blue, green and graduated dials appeared inside cases that could be broad, angular, or almost shield-shaped. Faceted crystals added yet another layer of geometry. Rather than being a single design, VANAC was a way for King Seiko to try something different.

That made it fertile territory when Seiko returned to the name in 2025. The designers carried the spirit of the original into a watch with no conventional bezel interrupting the transition between its angular upper surfaces and the crystal. A newly designed bracelet carried the geometry through to the wrist. Horizontal dial patterns, meanwhile, introduced the Tokyo horizon as a new theme for VANAC. Purple, navy and silver represented the city at twilight, midnight and sunrise.

The name has also been given a contemporary meaning. VANAC is now presented as an acronym for Vibrant case design, Active lifestyle, Novel dial ring, Alternative dial design and Comfortable bracelet – five phrases that describe the character of today’s collection.

Lighter, But No Less Substantial

Both the case and bracelet of the three new watches are made from titanium, cutting weight considerably without reducing the dimensions of the watch itself. At 41mm in diameter and 14.3mm thick, the new King Seiko VANAC remains a substantial sports watch. Titanium, however, is approximately 40 percent lighter than stainless steel, giving those dimensions a different feel on the wrist.

The case is built around a series of facets, and titanium’s naturally darker tone heightens the contrast between the different surfaces. Broad mirror-polished areas sit alongside brushed ones, changing the character of the case as it catches the light.

There is plenty of geometry in the bracelet too. Short links create strong horizontal lines while polished and brushed surfaces echo the finishing of the case. The effect is of a single design flowing from dial to case to bracelet.

Tokyo At Speed

The dials also distinguish the 2026 VANACs from last year’s watches. Tokyo remains the inspiration, but the viewpoint has shifted. The 2025 collection looked to the city’s distant horizon, while the new watches imagine traveling through it.

Horizontal lines are intersected by lines radiating out from the center of the dial. Seiko describes the effect as inspired by driving along Tokyo’s highways toward the skyline, with the converging lines suggesting perspective and speed.

Around them sits a three-dimensional ring carrying the hour markers, all filled with LumiBrite, Seiko’s high-performance luminous compound. At 12 o’clock, the oversized marker forms a stylized V, a motif repeated in the counterweight of the seconds hand and carried over from the 2025 models.

Three colors offer different interpretations of the theme. HKF001 is purple, intended to evoke the horizon at dawn. HKF002’s grey represents the architecture of the urban highway itself, while the black HKF003 takes its inspiration from moving through Tokyo at night.

A Movement To Match

There was another important element to King Seiko VANAC’s revival. The 2025 collection featured Caliber 8L45. Running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, it has 35 jewels and accuracy of +10 to −5 seconds per day. The automatic movement gives approximately 72 hours of power reserve, enough to put the watch down on Friday and find it still running on Monday.

Seiko describes the 8L45 as the pinnacle of its mechanical watch movements, engineered not only for accuracy but also for the robustness required of a sports watch.

Seiko has also made the movement part of the visual appeal of VANAC. A sapphire caseback reveals the rotor and bridges, both decorated with a broad wave pattern, while the King Seiko shield is printed on the crystal itself.

Elsewhere, the specifications are those of a sports watch designed for everyday use. It has 10-bar water resistance, magnetic resistance to 4,800 A/m, and a box-shaped sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating and a three-fold bracelet clasp with push-button release.

The King Evolves

King Seiko’s historic watches include some of the strongest designs in Seiko’s archive, and revisiting them has introduced a new generation to a name that had disappeared from the regular collections for decades. Put an original 1972 model alongside its 2026 descendant and the differences are more obvious than the similarities. What connects them is a willingness to experiment. The original VANAC brought bold shades and unconventional, multifaceted cases to King Seiko. Today’s King Seiko VANAC translates that same spirit into a contemporary sports watch.

That is where King Seiko VANAC’s real value now lies. Rather than tying King Seiko to its past, it gives the collection room to move forward. The 2025 revival established an entirely new design in steel. A year later, titanium has changed both how it wears and how its many surfaces interact with the light, while a new dial takes the Tokyo theme in another direction. More than half a century after the original, VANAC is once again expanding the idea of what a King Seiko can be.
