TAG Heuer Hearts Australia
TAG Heuer is a brand with deep roots and plenty of passion in Australia. You can’t walk down a major street without spotting a Carrera or an Aquaracer. The sporty, stylish designs of TAG Heuer are a perfect fit for the adventurous yet relaxed Australian identity. So it makes perfect sense that TAG Heuer, working with a group of local collectors, has teamed up to create a limited edition Carrera, made for Australians.
Before we get to the watch itself, we need to talk about how it happened and why it matters. Ostensibly, the watch is part of TAG Heuer’s 60th anniversary celebrations, but it’s also much more than that. Nicholas Biebuyck, TAG Heuer Heritage Director, explains: “Celebrating the 60th anniversary in Australia among such passionate collectors was an incredible experience. I am particularly pleased to be welcoming some of them to the TAG Heuer Collectors Summit. This remarkable project, which originated from discussions held in Australia, was driven by the collectors’ enthusiasm. Their motivation sparked a flow of ideas that allowed us to create an exceptional timepiece. I am genuinely excited to witness the launch of this project and see it come to life.”
This sentiment was echoed by Van Mulryan, General Manager of TAG Heuer Australia and New Zealand, who said, “The dedication and expertise of our Australian TAG Heuer community have been instrumental in the creation of this exceptional timepiece. Australia is a key market for TAG Heuer, and this design — born from a true collaboration — pays tribute to our rich heritage while continuing to push the boundaries of modern watchmaking. It exemplifies the strength and enduring passion of our collectors, who, together with Nicholas Biebuyck, Paxton Wong and our dedicated TAG Heuer product team, have brought to life a TAG Heuer Carrera that truly celebrates our legacy of innovation.”
The process for creating this watch dates back to 2023, when Australian collectors met with Nicholas Biebuyck in Sydney and, as collectors are wont to do, discussed their favorite historic references and speculated on their ideal contemporary take on a historically inspired Carrera. A few short years later, this conversation (and many more since) has turned into a spectacular limited edition. In particular, two watches were central in the inspiration for the Australian Limited Edition: the Heuer Autavia 1163 and the Heuer 1158CHN, aka the “Success Watch.”
The Heuer Autavia 1163 isn’t just an instantly recognizable vintage Heuer — it represents a significant advancement in chronograph design. It was made with pilots and motorsport racers in mind, and offered a compelling combination of visual clarity and functionality. It was also the first Heuer chronograph to feature the model name on the dial. Elements from this watch that have inspired the Australian Limited Edition include the black chronograph registers, bold blue chronograph and subdial hands, as well as the balanced placement of the date at 6.
The second inspiration for the Australian Carrera is an exceptional gold Carrera Chronograph gifted by Jack Heuer to F1 driver Ronnie Peterson, a Heuer 1158CHN with the engraving “Success Ronnie Peterson from Jack W. Heuer” on the caseback. Gold Carreras like this were often seen on the wrists of Formula 1 racers, and have become iconic symbols of that (if you’ll pardon the pun) golden era of the sport. As for the elements that inspired the TAG Heuer team and local collectors, it comes down to the subtle finishes of the dial.
Limited to just 75 pieces, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Australian Limited Edition (as it is formally known) is a historically inspired 39mm Carrera Chronograph, with a silver dial and Côtes de Genève-style vertical brushed finish, paired with two black azurage counters and blue lacquered hands. Of course, this dial is visible from pretty much all angles thanks to the glassbox-style sapphire crystal. It comes with a black perforated calfskin strap — commonly referred to as a “rally” strap, for its association with racing, and the caseback is open, with the “Australian Limited Edition” text and “XX/75” limited edition number around the outer edge. Also visible from the rear is the in-house Caliber TH20-00, a thoroughly modern chronograph caliber with 80 hours of power reserve, column-wheel engagement and (for peace of mind) a five-year warranty.
To state the obvious, this limited edition Carrera for the Australian market is a very handsome and stylish watch — and a testament to just how versatile this current, historically inspired Carrera model is. But more importantly, this watch represents a great achievement for TAG Heuer in Australia and the depths of enthusiasm and commitment the brand commands down under.
