Patek Philippe Releases Seven Limited Editions at Watch Art Grand Exhibition Milan

Avatar photo

Patek Philippe will officially open the doors to one of its most anticipated events of the year tomorrow  — the Watch Art Grand Exhibition Milan. From October 2 to 18, visitors to the city will have the opportunity to admire some of the maison’s greatest treasures. This is the seventh edition of the Grand Exhibition since its inaugural one in Dubai in 2012. Other editions have included stops in Singapore (2019) and Tokyo (2023).

This latest installation takes place at the historic CityOval building, formerly the Palazzo delle Scintille, and showcases over 500 pieces. Apart from highlights from the Patek Philippe archives, of which there are many, Patek Philippe is also releasing seven stunning limited editions on the occasion, reserved especially for the Italian market. This means that you will have to be a resident of Lake Como or somewhere similar to be anywhere close to sniffing one of these out. Still, kudos to the maison for honoring the host country in the best way possible — by putting all allocations where its mouth is.

Instantaneous Perpetual Calendar Chronograph: Ref. 5978P-010 Milano 2026 Limited Edition

The perpetual calendar chronograph has been a signature Patek Philippe complication combination since Ref. 1518 was introduced in 1941. It is only a matter of time that the maison brings it up to date with that most coveted quality of the 21st century — instantaneity. And the new Ref. 5978 does just that with a new Caliber CH 29-535 PS QI. Limited to 120 pieces, it marks the first time that the maison combines two instantaneous complications in a single watch, pairing the manually wound chronograph movement CH 29-535 PS and the instantaneous perpetual calendar from the R CHR 27 PS QI.

Three calendar apertures are arranged in an arc at 12 o’clock indicating day, date and month, with blue numerals and text against a white background, framed in white gold. As an instantaneous perpetual calendar, the three indications will jump simultaneously in 30 milliseconds at midnight — blink, and it will be a new day.  A moonphase at 6 o’clock, a day/night indicator at 8 o’clock and a leap-year indicator at 4 o’clock complete the calendar indications, all of which are in, appropriately enough, Italian. An instantaneous 30-minute counter, where the minute hand snaps to the next minute each time the central chronograph seconds hand completes a revolution, sits at 3 o’clock while the small seconds subdial is at 9 o’clock.

The challenges here, for both chronograph and perpetual calendar, come down to energy and how to manage it efficiently and precisely. Combining these two major complications was no easy task. Moving four disks at the same time requires a significantly greater burst of energy than moving them progressively. Patek Philippe’s solution was a clever mechanism that accumulates the energy over hours and releases it in a fraction of a second to advance the calendar indications simultaneously. This allows the instantaneous 30-minute chronograph counter to operate even when the calendar disks jump and switch over.

The Ref. 5978 is housed in a 42mm platinum Calatrava case, with a thickness of 14.24mm

With its 42mm Calatrava case in gleaming platinum, the Ref. 5978 has considerable presence on the wrist, accentuated by its 14.24mm thickness. Its bezel, however, is concaved, and turns the eye and attention to the navy-blue sunburst dial with a textured center and fringed by an inky black gradient rim.

The new 500-component movement beats at 4Hz with power reserve estimated at between 55 and 65 hours when the chronograph is disengaged. Of course, it bears all the gorgeous decoration of the maison, which can be admired via the sapphire caseback that comes with a transfer-printed inscription pronouncing “Patek Phillippe Milano 2026.”

World Time Minute Repeater: Ref. 5531G-013/12 Milano 2026 Limited Editions

Up next is a fan favorite — the Ref. 5531 Patek Philippe World Time Minute Repeater first launched in 2017 for New York’s Art of Watches Grand Exhibition. This latest edition continues the tradition of presenting a map of the host city stunningly depicted in grand feu cloisonné enamel on the dial. Here, Ref. 5531G-012 features the Milan city center by day, while Ref. 5531G-013 captures it by night. As with previous editions, the host city name Milan appears in red on the city disk, along with the other 23 cities representing different time zones all displayed in Italian.

While other world-time minute repeaters chime out home time even when their owners are jet-setting across the globe, the Ref. 5531 always strikes local time, i.e. the hour in the time zone represented by the city selected at the 12 o’clock position and displayed by the center hand. To accomplish this feat at the time, Patek Philippe developed the patented self-winding Caliber R 27 HU.

A Tribute to Il Tricolore: Refs. 7147G-010, 7007G-010 and 7047G-010 Milano 2026 Limited Editions

Italian colors fly high for Patek Phillipe’s Milan outing with this Calatrava trio that takes a leaf from the bold, graphic aesthetics of 2020’s Ref. 6007. Each of the references come in a color of the Italian flag: specifically, the Ref. 7147G perpetual calendar with moonphase in green, the Ref. 7007 date and center seconds in white and the Ref. 7047G minute repeater in fiery red. All three come in 38mm fully polished white gold cases, sized down from the 40mm of Ref. 6007, and all bearing the striking embossed carbon motif at the center of their dials.

The Ref. 7147G perpetual calendar comes with a brilliant green lacquered dial with applied Arabic numerals in white gold and calendar indications in Italian. As in the Ref. 6007, the embossed carbon motif at the center of the dial takes the spotlight, here framed by the snailed inner minute track and surrounded by the three subdials indicating day at 9 o’clock, month at 3 o’clock and date and moonphase at 6 o’clock. It is powered by the Caliber 240 Q ultra thin self-winding movement that measures just 3.88mm, which gives the watch an overall svelteness of 9.72mm. It is limited to 100 pieces.

The 200-piece Ref. 7007, meanwhile, is decidedly bold and modern, with its pairing of a lacquered white dial, charcoal-gray white gold baton-style hands and applied Arabic numerals with white luminescent coating, set in stark contrast against the black inner and outer minutes tracks. The date aperture sits discreetly at 3 o’clock.

Limited to just five pieces, the Ref. 7047 minute repeater is as Italian as they come. First unveiled earlier this year at Watches and Wonders, featuring a handsome blue dial with contrasting orange accents, the latest iteration is limited to just five pieces and comes with a flaming red dial and shiny red leather alligator strap. It is powered by the self-winding R 27 PS caliber with a 22K gold guillochéd mini-rotor.

Aquanaut Date Center Seconds: Ref. 5167A-014 Milano 2026 Limited Edition

The last of the limited editions is the Aquanaut Date and Center Seconds Ref. 5167A. The Aquanaut family is sporty and contemporary, and this limited edition of 250 watches is no exception. It is a new handsome blue colorway for the reference first launched in 2007 for the 10th anniversary of the Aquanaut. It retains the textured dial embossed with the signature Aquanaut design, now rendered in sunburst blue with a black gradient rim, paired with a red transfer-printed minute scale, a red varnished sweep seconds hand, and white gold applied numerals and baton hands. Case dimensions remain at 40.8mm diameter and 8.1mm thick, while the composite strap is now in a matching midnight blue. It is powered by the current Caliber 26-330 S C, which adds stop-seconds for precise time setting.
