Luminox partners Bear Grylls for a true survivor's watchBy Darren Ho
Attention, survivalists and zombie apocalypse believers, or if you just like taking hikes and camping outdoors. We’ve got great news for you. If like me, you’ve had your survival pack prepped, here’s another one item you’ll want to add in that backpack. Luminox, the brand used by USAF pilots and Navy Seals, has partnered the ultimate wilderness survivor celebrity, Bear Grylls, to create the Survival Series, a range of 8 references across three models from the Land, Air and Sea categories of the brand’s collections.
Grylls is a former SAS serviceman and survival instructor best known for the Discovery Channel show Man vs. Wild. He’s also the Chief Scout for the UK, is someone whose advice you’d definitely take when it comes to surviving in the outdoors. The outdoorsman has been wearing Luminox for some time, so when the brand approached him to work on a collaboration series, he was naturally agreeable.
Said Grylls, “It’s incredibly important to me to work alongside world class trusted partners and Luminox have proved that and more. I’ve been wearing Luminox since my early adventuring days, so it’s great to now be a part of the family. The rugged watch range has been carefully crafted featuring multi-functional design and state of the art materials – set to inspire and encourage the adventurer in everyone – men and women, boys and girls, outdoor novices and experts.”
The watches all feature Grylls’ motto, “Never Give Up”, and are multi-functional, as he’s expressed, with bonus features such as attached compasses, paracord straps, rulers and Morse code decoders (the one thing I’m missing in my survival pack). The timepieces themselves are constructed in rugged stainless steel or hardy CARBONOX™, a carbon compound material constituting long bars of carbon or compressed carbon powder. The material adds strength and stiffness while keeping it light.
Our favorite is probably the reference 3780 Land Series model, which features a two-counter chronograph with a walking speed meter, compass and ruler markings as well as Morse code decoder on a rubber strap. A second variation of the 3780 comes with a paracord strap, because you never know when you need some sturdy rope in the wilderness.
The Master Series reference 3740 comes with a three-counter chrono, tachymeter and Morse code indication for SOS on the display. It’s also water resistant to 300m (the other two can survive to 200m depth) and shares similar information with the Land Series.
There’s also the Sea Series, which is a three-hand, diving-style model with ISO 6425 specs and with a blue or orange detailing on the 20-minute countdown track on the bezel which is stunning. All watches are equipped with Luminox’s 25-year Light Technology as well.
6 of the models will be available from next month onwards, with additional pieces in September under the Air series. In Singapore, they will be available from Luminox’s Vivocity storefront. For more information check out Luminox’s site.
