Introducing the Mean Green Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback

Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback with a Green Dial

The dial color that seems to have ruled the past decade is, undoubtedly, the color blue. Every time a watchmaker has released a blue dial variation of a watch — existing or otherwise — it’s almost, always, resulted in a hit. Caveat there being that this was the case, as long as the watch was executed in the right shade of blue. Regardless, blue always seems to have resulted in a winner.

Given such a reality, executing dials in non-traditional colors or shoe-in blue is always a gamble. Because you first have to have picked out a color that makes sense for the watch, and then discover a shade of said color that elevates the watch. Neither one of these considerations can be compromised.

The perfect example of one such watch in 2020 that managed to hit the nail on the head for both of the above parameters is the Blancpain Bathyscaphe Mokarran. The limited edition is a 43.6mm satin-finished black ceramic watch with a unidirectional satin-brushed black ceramic bezel fitted with a green ceramic insert bearing Liquidmetal® hour-markers.

The Bathyscaphe Mokarran Limited Edition with the extraordinarily good-looking green dial, limited to 50 pieces

What sets the watch apart from preceding Bathyscape, and possibly, the plethora of watches launched this year, is really that smoked emerald green used for the dial and bezel. Blancpain calls it “tropical green”. Whatever green it is that the brand has isolated for the watch, it simply works is what matters and gives the familiar Bathyscape a new lease of desirability. Too bad only 50 pieces of the watch were issued and sold solely through their boutiques in New York and Las Vegas.

Now, if you weren’t one of these lucky 50 individuals, hope has arrived. Today, Blancpain is announcing a version of their Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback with a similar green dial. If we were to just stop here and say that Blancpain took a colorway that received universal approval and simply slapped it onto a new watch, you and I would be grossly wrong.

Adapting the color to the tri-compax chronograph configuration, especially with the recessed chronograph subdials, means that the green dial had to be appropriately adjusted to accommodate the additional elements on the dial without losing the strength of the color.

The watch is powered by the F385 calibre, a self-winding chronograph movement that beats at 5Hz, enabling the chronograph to measure time to an accuracy of 1/10th of a second. The movement also features a flyback function, which allows you to instantly restart the mechanism by depressing the pusher at 4 o’clock.

But here’s the best bit, unlike the Blancpain Bathyscaphe Mokarran limited edition, the Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback in green has not been announced in a limited number.

Blancpain is taking the opportunity to also announce the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date with yet another non-traditional watch dial color. This time in a shade of sand with a smoked effect.

The watch features a day-date indication with large rectangular hour makers, topped off by Arabic numerals in 5-minute increments. The 43mm satin-brushed steel case also features a unidirectional rotating bezel with a brown ceramic insert to match the dial and features Liquidmetal® hour-markers.

The watch is powered by the self-winding caliber 1315DD with 120 hours of power reserve, which means that the watch is really suited to be a great daily beater. This is even more so the case because the movement comes equipped with a silicon balance spring, ensuring great antimagnetic properties.

The Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date “Desert Edition” comes fitted on a sand colored sail canvas strap to, of course, match the dial. The timepiece will be issued in a limited run of 500 pieces only.
