Introducing the William Wood Fearless Field Watch

Anybody who’s unfamiliar with UK-based William Wood watches can learn more about the brand and founder Jonny Garrett here, in my recent installment of Cool Britannia. William Wood is a luxury firefighter watch brand producing watches dedicated to Garrett’s late grandfather William Wood, who had served in the British fire service for 25 years.

In the spirit of ‘giving back’, the brand gives a percentage of sales revenue to international firefighting charities. Garrett also takes upcycling of firefighting equipment very seriously, including taking 100-year-old British brass firefighters’ helmets, melting them down and pouring the residual brass into a mold that forms the inside of the winding crowns of the watches. The straps on the watches are made from genuine upcycled fire hoses in the different colors used by fire departments all around the world.

Today sees the launch of William Wood’s first field watch, which comes in a choice of three colors, with complementary straps and a modern-era fire helmet embossed into the caseback with colored visor. The field watch is essentially a time- or time-and-date-only watch that were devised for military personnel for use in the ‘field’. Rugged and robust, the watches need to be reliable and able to withstand the rigors of the rough and tumble of professional use.

William Wood’s new Fearless watch is such a piece that is named after the ultimate attribute of the heroic first responders that the brand is dedicated to — a watch that can take pretty much whatever you throw at it. The 40mm steel case has an IP Stealth Black plating that houses a workhorse Seiko automatic movement. The dial has a rough finish inspired by charcoal, juxtaposed with the luxurious warmth of rose gold applied Arabic hours. There are three chapter ring options — yellow, red or orange — with a matching seconds hand. And then there are nods to helmets both old and new…

As I mentioned at the beginning, each winding crown on William Wood watches features a core of brass. The brass is from century-old firefighters’ helmets that Garrett melted down in Hatton Garden which is then formed into the winding crown cores, each embossed with a vintage fire helmet logo. The black steel knurling is then set around the outside of the brass core. Turn the watch over and on the reverse is another helmet, this time a pressed illustration of a modern full-face helmet. The helmet features a sapphire visor that is either in yellow, orange or red, depending on the dial color, giving a glimpse of the Seiko movement within.

The Fearless also debuts the use of repurposed black fire hoses for the straps. According to Garrett, the black ones are the hardest to find, so he is very happy to be using this on the new watches. The stitching is also color-coded to match the dial, tying the whole look together nicely.

Garrett explained, “We set out to create a collection that was very different to anything we had created so far, but still wanted to stay true to the core values of William Wood. A field watch is a first for us and we are thrilled to finally be able to show off what we have spent nearly a year working on. Sourcing the black fire hose for the straps wasn’t easy, to say the least, but we felt that was a feature that gives this collection an edge, along with the unique and very cool visor caseback, of course.”
