Introducing the Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-day Power Reserve Carbon White

The tourbillon is one of the many marvels of horological masterwork, an answer to a problem faced when a timepiece would spend much of its time in a pocket and therefore endured uneven stresses and gravitational forces. With the invention of the wristwatch, that particular issue became a thing of the past, but our love of the tourbillon complication persists.

A Study in Contrasts

With the Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-day Power Reserve Carbon White, Hublot brings their distinctive flair for modern materials and style to their Big Bang Tourbillon concept. In this iteration, they are playing with contrasts — white and black, old and new, curve and angle.

The colorway is starkly black and white, reminiscent of the grainy photographs of early pioneers in watchmaking. The 42-mm case is carbon fiber with white micro-glass fibers that creates an almost abstract frame to the sharply technical mechanicals behind the dial. The bezel is a soft rectangle, clean and modern, with only the speckled white fibers and the signature H-shaped screws for decoration.

The minimalist, tonneau-shaped case illustrates the curves and sweeps of the dial and visible mechanicals. The dial itself is a playful arrangement of overlapping circles that shines within the subdued case and bezel. The main timekeeping is offset and interlocks with a 5-day power reserve indicator and the tourbillon cage as it performs its one rotation every minute. There is a joyful contradiction between the clean angles of the case and the spiral of constant movement in the dial.

Serious Play

Beneath the imaginative surface lies the HUB6020 manufacture movement, the high-spirited aesthetics giving way to the technical prowess found in all of Hublot’s watches. The in-house, hand-wound movement is a skeleton tourbillon with an impressive 115-hour power reserve. This movement was designed specifically to fit within the tonneau-shaped case of the Spirit in order to maximize the exuberant aesthetic.

The watch is paired with a white rubber strap that has two lateral, structured black seams to highlight the black-and-white contrasting color scheme. The strap closes with a black ceramic and black-plated titanium deployment buckle clasp. This watch does feature Hublot’s patented “One-Click” system for fast and easy interchangeability of straps. In literally a single click, the strap can be swapped out for daily reinvention.

The Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-day Power Reserve Carbon White is a limited release of only 100 pieces.
