Introducing the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team”

The Low-Down

IWC has been an “Official Engineering Partner” of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team since 2013, cementing the worlds of fine watchmaking and the pinnacle of motorsports with shared values of engineering excellence and tenacity in being the best in their respective fields. Besides IWC branding on driver gloves, overalls, team kit and cars, IWC has also marked this partnership with limited-edition timepieces released in 2019, namely the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport” and the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport”. Both watches sported the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team colors, with black ceramic cases and carbon fiber dials complemented with Petronas cyan accents.

This year, at the upcoming inaugural Miami Grand Prix that begins on 6 May, IWC is unveiling its first-ever Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team watch. Unlike the previous limited editions, this is a team watch that unites members of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team in their podium quest, meant to be worn by the team, from designers, aerodynamicists, race engineers, to strategists and mechanics. Says Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen, “Both fine watchmaking and racing are all about precision, craftsmanship and performance engineering. But it’s the human factor — the passion, the love and the dedication — that makes all the difference between good and great. This notion perfectly describes our long-standing partnership with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team and we are celebrating this partnership with the launch of the new team watch in Miami,” explained.

What should get the watch collecting and Mercedes-AMG Petronas fans excited is that the public, too, can be a part of this: the Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport” is available to the public for purchase exclusively online at IWC.com.

Based on the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41, the Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team” recalls its racing soul with a case fabricated from Grade 5 titanium, widely used in high-performance automotive engineering for offering the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metal. The 41mm case is sandblasted, and paired with a black dial with printing and luminescence in cyan in accordance with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team colors.

Visible through the crystal caseback is the self-winding 69385 caliber, a 4Hz chronograph with column wheel that also displays day and date, featuring bi-directional pawl winding and 46 hours of power reserve. The Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team” is very versatile for everyday wear, being shipped with two different straps — one in black embossed calfskin leather, and the other a green rubber strap — both easily interchangeable via the tool-free EasX-CHANGE system.

IMHO

A team watch that consumers can buy into is a great idea — it makes one feel yet more involved with one’s favorite Formula One team — an authentic piece of the uniform, so to speak; and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas is a great team to rally around. While it’s not the oldest Formula One team, Mercedes-AMG Petronas has been part of Formula One since 1970, and in recent years, it’s had a great showing, clinching eight championships between the 2014 and 2021 seasons, and it holds the record for the longest winning streak of the greatest number of consecutive constructors’ titles in Formula One. The 2022 season expected to be another stellar year for the team. It’s the right time to produce a team watch that is also available to consumers.
