The 2022 F1 Grand Prix is in full swing, with last weekend’s Miami race done and dusted and the high-speed roadshow gearing up for the historic Spanish race in Barcelona. Of course, it’s not just about high stakes and drama on the track, as the just-announced Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Chronograph Aston Martin F1 Edition goes to show.

The Low-Down

For the second outing of this high-octane automotive partnership, Girard-Perregaux has deployed their super sporty, 44mm Laureato Absolute case, and it does not disappoint. On its own the broad-shouldered, blocky design of the Laureato Absolute and Aston Martin’s signature green livery would have been enough to get this LE over the line, but that wasn’t enough for Girard-Perregaux, not by a long shot. Not only has the brand opted for a light and strong case in a composite of titanium and carbon that is a solid thematic fit for the F1, but for the first time, they’ve made use of carbon elements sourced from two 2021 season cars. It’s a smart choice that offers a level of authenticity in this partnership that goes beyond a badge deal. The technical smarts don’t stop there either, the supple strap is made from FKM rubber and also features carbon elements from 2021 cars, and has been finished with a fabric effect. Finally, for the first time on a Laureato Absolute, we’re treated to an unimpeded view of the chronograph through a clear caseback.

IMHO

Automotive partnerships are ubiquitous in the watch space, and its pretty easy to become jaded when presented with an endless array of sporty chronographs with oscillating rotors shaped like steering wheels. Girard-Perregaux hasn’t fallen into that trap here and manages to present something that delivers what we expect of a Laureato Absolute made in collaboration with Aston Martin, and indeed go beyond it by adding a little spritzing of genuine F1 spice into the actual substance of this already substantial watch.
