The Low-Down

Back in 2017, Montblanc was an early mover in the nascent Swiss luxury smartwatch segment, and ever since, the brand’s line of Summit watches has seen continual updates and refinements. The latest step in this evolution is the Montblanc Summit Lite, a less hefty aluminium and stainless steel wearable that’s been made with fitness front-of-mind.

IMHO

At this stage of the game, the parameters of a commercially oriented smartwatch — especially one using Google’s Wear OS are pretty clearly codified. The product you create is a balancing act between battery life, hardware power, software smarts, all wrapped up in a package that meets a stringent set of functional requirements while looking the business and functioning as intended. It’s quite the challenge. For the new Summit Lite Montblanc CEO Nicolas Baretzki has adopted a focused approach: “With the renewed focus on health, fitness, mindfulness and wellbeing we are witnessing today, our goal was to create a smartwatch that had just the right tools to support its owner throughout the day, in a way that was instinctive and effortless for today’s business lifestyle customer.” That is all well and good — but how does the watch deliver on this promise. Firstly, the software. Montblanc has developed a suite of proprietary apps geared towards wellness. There’s a cardio coach, a body energy tracker, and trackers that monitor sleep and stress, respectively. These functions come on top of the heart rate monitor and full GPS, as well as the full Wear OS experience and complete Google app ecosystem. On the hardware front, the watch is, as has been previously mentioned, lightweight. The 43mm case is made from stainless steel and recycled aluminium offered in black or silver-grey. The case is water-resistant up to 50m and is offered on either rubber or textile straps. Meaning the watch is well-suited for action, adventure and recovery. Of course, it’s also more than capable of keeping you on top of your calendar too.
