The Low-Down

Montblanc’s Villeret facility — the historical home of Minerva — has long been home to some of the finest, traditionally made chronograph movements in Switzerland. Today the brand has announced a new calibre, the Calibre MB M14.08 that offers a fresh take on the 1940s Calibre 48, which was based on mathematical principles, and used in the Minerva Pythagore.

The Heritage Pythagore Small Second is available in two limited editions in rose and white gold

IMHO

Mathematics was never my particular strong suit in school, but I don’t need to be across sin, cos, and tan to appreciate the very real, non-abstract beauty of this watch and its movement. Before we talk about the dial side, let’s jump into the calibre. Based on the Minerva calibre 48 designed by Andrey Frey and built in accordance with the Golden Ratio attributed to Pythagoras, the new Calibre MB M14.08 is, like the original, a large manual wind (14 lignes) that honours mathematical principles and pairs it with Villeret’s famous finishing capabilities to tremendous effect (and an up to date power reserve of 80 hours).

The MB M14.08 adds a high-quality, versatile time-only calibre into the Villeret family that allows the collection to play in previously unexplored spaces.

This new calibre is an important move for Montblanc. The brand’s Villeret watches have a tremendous reputation and appeal, but up until now, they have been limited to chronographs of varying complexity. The MB M14.08 adds a high-quality, versatile time-only calibre into the family that allows the collection to play in previously unexplored spaces. Based on the first two releases, formally known as the Montblanc Heritage Pythagore Small Second Limited Edition 148, it looks like an exciting place to start. Visually similar to Montblanc’s mainline heritage watches, these two limited editions in rose and white gold respectively measure in at a very smart 39mm, with deliciously curvy lugs and a complex, multi-textural dial (keep an eye out for the secret signature), resulting in a watch that represents Minerva’s rich past and Montblanc’s bright future.
