Introducing IWC’s Novelties at Watches and Wonders 2021

Share
2021 can officially be declared as the year of IWC Pilot watches. A big hint was the recent release of Tribute to 3705 limited edition. Apart from the big news of 43mm Big Pilot, IWC has released worthy variations of Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar, two popular blue and green colorways for the Pilot Chronograph, and a Top Gun Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar special edition.

IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar

The Big Pilot Watch Perpetual Calendar has a sub-dial at 12 o’clock that presents a perpetual double moon phase display accurate for both the northern and southern hemispheres.(Image: Revolution)

The Low-Down

Since Kurt Klaus developed the perpetual calendar in the 1980s, it has been a popular complication in the IWC lineup. The feature will automatically recognize the differing number of days across months and account for leap years, only requiring an adjustment in 2100 when the leap year will be omitted to align with the Gregorian calendar. A lovely sub-dial at 12 o’clock presents a perpetual double moon phase display accurate for both the northern and southern hemispheres.

IMHO

The IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar adds another attractive option to the collection, offering a blue dial with rhodium-plated hands in a stainless-steel 46.2 mm case paired with a blue calf leather strap. The 52615 movement features the classic Pellaton automatic winding system with an elegant pawl design that stores ample energy in two-barrels that delivers 7 days of power reserve, making it a perfect weekend companion. The displays are all perfectly synchronized, so the calendar can be set with a single crown in a refreshingly user-friendly design.

IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41

IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 is offered with a blue or green dial, has rhodium plated hands and highly-legible white numeral and minutes track designs.(Image: Revolution)

The Low-Down

IWC has a long history of making watches for pilots. For 85 years, they’ve been engineering high quality instrument timepieces to help an aviator in the cockpit. The chronograph stopwatch function is one of the most valuable tools for recording take-off time and calculating fuel reserves. The robustness of an IWC pilot’s watch makes them ideal investments for active lifestyles and heirlooms that tell a story.

IMHO

The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 is offered with a blue or green dial, has rhodium plated hands, and highly-legible crisp white numeral and minutes track designs. The stainless steel 41 mm case has a screw-in crown for a 10-bar water resistance. The 69385 Caliber offers a column-wheel chronograph for hours, minutes and seconds, a date and day display, and small hacking seconds for precision time setting. The watch is paired with a coordinating blue (for the blue dial) or brown (for the green dial) calfskin strap or a stainless-steel bracelet. IWC is placing greater emphasis on the option for steel bracelets for their Pilot watches.

IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Top Gun Edition “Mojave Desert”

Inspired by the arid Mojave Desert that houses the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, IWC’s TOP GUN models were made for the US Navy pilots.(Image: Revolution)

The Low-Down

IWC’s TOP GUN collection has grown to include two new models. Popular for the sand-colored ceramic of the case, this is a watch engineered to stand up to any activity. It was designed for high acceleration maneuvers in supersonic jets like the Super Hornet or the unpredictable adventures of a long stint on an aircraft carrier. Made to equip the US Navy’s pilots, and inspired by the arid Mojave Desert that houses the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, the TOP GUN models are built to last.

Both models feature a dark brown dial and sand-colored hands that complement the sand-colored ceramic case very well. The rubber strap with textile inlay completes the robust sport aesthetic. The TOP GUN models are meant to work hard and maintain accuracy and precise timekeeping under the most extreme conditions. Both models are great options to round out a comprehensive watch collection.

IMHO

The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” is the first time IWC has transitioned the ceramic case to the Big Pilot line. With the real estate afforded by the 46.5 mm case, it’s a great use-case for their perpetual calendar complication. There’s plenty of room for the complex arrangement of sub-dials for quick orientation as a pilot crosses the world at supersonic speeds. This timepiece features the 7 days of power reserve delivered from the combination of a Pellaton automatic winding system with two barrels. This watch can easily be considered for 2021’s ultimate high-complication stealth tool watch.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Edition “Mojave Desert” is a simpler version of the ‘Mojave Desert’ perpetual calendar watch with just the date and power reserve display on the dial.(Image: Revolution)

IMHO

The Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Edition “Mojave Desert” is a cleaner, simpler version without the perpetual calendar complication. It’s a straight forward timekeeping watch with date and power reserve display. Like the previous version, the movement is the in-house 52615 with the long power reserve and 60 meters water resistance.
The ceramic case has a titanium case back and features IWC’s signature soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields.
