Inside BOVET’s Manufacture: How Haute Horlogerie Is Made
The journey inside BOVET continues. After visiting the historic Château de Môtiers, Wei Koh travels to BOVET’s manufacture in Tramelan to discover the technical and industrial capabilities behind some of the house’s most ambitious creations. BOVET produces more than 95% of the components used in its timepieces within its own facilities, an extraordinary level of vertical integration for an independent manufacture. From hairsprings and regulating organs to movement components, mainplates, dials and increasingly even cases, the manufacture gives BOVET the independence to take an idea from conception through to execution under one roof. Wei begins in the technical office, where new movements and complications are developed, before following components onto the manufacture floor. He sees profile turning, machining and precision processes used to create gear wheels, pinions, screws, barrel components and mainplates, as well as the microscopic finishing required to reduce friction and improve efficiency. The visit also offers a fascinating look at BOVET’s prototyping process. The Récital 28 provides an example of how engineers, watchmakers and production specialists work closely together when developing complex mechanisms, while the Récital 30 demonstrates how that technical ambition is translated into an intuitive experience for the collector. Throughout the manufacture, quality control takes place at virtually every stage before a component can continue to the next step. Together, BOVET’s Château de Môtiers and Tramelan manufacture reveal two sides of the same philosophy: preserving traditional artistic crafts while maintaining the technical independence required to create increasingly ambitious mechanical watchmaking.
