In Conversation with Karl-Friedrich Scheufele on the Art and Science of Ferdinand Berthoud

Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President of Chopard, has always had a deep appreciation for the art, science and history of horology. This passion drove him to revive a long forgotten name from the annals of watchmaking, the 18th-century Clockmaker-Mechanic to King Louis XV and the French Navy, Ferdinand Berthoud. Berthoud’s extraordinarily precise marine chronometers built his reputation and continue to inspire the wristwatch designs of the modern brand that bears his name.

Wei speaks to Karl-Friedrich on the evolution of Ferdinand Berthoud’s certified chronometers that have won multiple prizes at the GPHG. From the inaugural FB 1 that won the Aiguille d’Or in 2016, the FB 1R and the FB 2RE that bagged the Chronometry Prize two years in a row in 2019 and 2020, and finally the 2022 Mechanical Exception Prize third chapter that culminates in the FB 3SPC, which won the Mechanical Exception Prize in 2022.
