Whimsical, cheerful, and entirely original.
French luxury giant Hermès has a talent for tasteful design. The brand’s Arceau wristwatch case, distinguished by its signature asymmetrical lugs, serves as a prime example – it has retained its stylish look for nearly half a century. In recent years, Hermès has further enhanced the collection with dials featuring lavish métiers d’art decorations.

In a unique collaboration with Chinese artist Tong Ren, the latest Arceau Mon Premier Galop reimagines the brand’s quintessential equestrian motif, bringing the design to life through a blend of enameling, silk threading, and marquetry.

An alluring painting

A Chinese artist now based in Finland, Tong Ren, specializes in reimagining natural elements through the use of geometric shapes and textures. This unique perspective is evident in his collaboration with Hermès on the latest Arceau, where the horse depiction boasts an entirely original look, unlike anything found on other watches.

More importantly, the portrayal is both clever and tasteful. The horse isn’t static but appears dynamic and galloping, adding a vibrant feel to the watch.

This vibrancy is further enhanced by the decoration techniques, another highlight of the Arceau Mon Premier Galop. Three distinct methods – enameling, silk threading, and leather marquetry – skillfully combine to create a visually striking composition that maintains perfect harmony.

The blue sky and yellow sun, forming the background, are created using enameling. This technique requires multiple layers of paint and firing to achieve the desired color and depth.

The horse itself is a combination of silk thread threading and leather marquetry, each technique applied on a separate dial piece before being meticulously assembled. Among these, the silk threading is the most unconventional, adding a touch of dynamism by evoking the flowing lines of the horse’s tail and the forward movement of its legs.

Case and movement

Complementing the high-end execution of the dial, the case is made from white gold. The bezel is further decorated with 82 diamonds, adding a touch of luxury and brilliance. The 38 mm size strikes a perfect balance, appearing modern, chic, and confident on the wrist, while remaining elegant for a variety of wearers.

Inside the watch beats the brand’s H1912 movement, which is made by Vaucher, a company in which Hermès holds a 25% stake. This automatic movement boasts a 50-hour power reserve.
