Hamilton’s Spicy Limited Editions for Dune: Part Two

Share

Hamilton, Hollywood’s favorite watch manufacturer, has collaborated with the production of Dune: Part Two on two new limited edition Venturas and a screen worn “wrist device” fit for the deserts of Arrakis.
Hamilton watches have been featured in more Hollywood movies than just about any other watch brand in existence. With over 500 major films under its belt spanning the better part of the last century, Hamilton is no stranger to the red carpet. But this year, Hamilton’s collaboration goes a step further. Working closely with prop master Doug Harlocker, Hamilton developed a prop watch for possibly the biggest film of 2024 – Dune: Part Two.
The “Desert Watch” as it is known, was created to seamlessly accompany the rest of the remarkable costumes and fantasy technology – likely a reinterpretation of the Holtzman shield device from Dune lore. As such, it was not meant to be a traditional timepiece – much to the chagrin of many a filmgoer/watch lover. But if the Desert Watch was meant not for this world, but instead for Arrakis, Hamilton had a second challenge – how to translate the inspiration of the project into a watch that is fit for the real world.

Thus, the Ventura XXL Bright Dune Limited Edition and the Ventura Edge Dune Limited Edition were born. Both are striking interpretations of the unmistakable Ventura case design, but interpreted in dramatic, angular ways – telling a story of the Ventura and interpreted through the lens of a sci-fi world.

The Ventura XXL Bright is the more traditional of the two, with an illuminating dial pattern taken straight from the Desert Watch, punctuated by luminous indices and hands and framed by a stepped, matte black dial. The Ventura Edge utilizes a digital read out with a more tangible, structural dial ornamentation, again inspired by the layout of the Desert Watch. Depressing the crown illuminates both the digital numerals and a blue accent light.
Both watches are limited, with 3,000 of the XXL Bright to be produced and 2000 of the Edge. Both pieces are presented in a wildly cool textured cases – which feel like capsules or artifacts pulled directly from the spice-laden sands of Arrakis. Inside the case are additional hidden details, like an inscription printed in Chakobsa, the secret language of the Fremen.
It’s an interesting application of Hamilton’s Ventura, which turns 67 this year. The XXL Bright Dune Edition, which utilizes the existing design language of the Ventura line, is rooted soundly in the legacy of the Ventura model – though updated with modern twists. The Edge Dune Edition, by contrast, represents a more bold interpretation of what the Ventura can be. With its sharp, angular, faceted case and industrial, sci-fi dial detailing, the Edge presents a potential image of the future of Ventura –  two sides of an identity –  like Paul Atreides himself, his past on Caladan and his future on Arrakis.
