Gerald Charles Masterlink Atelier: Federico Ziviani on Craft in a Digital Age
In an increasingly digital world, why does the mechanical watch seem to matter more than ever? At Geneva Watch Days, Wei Koh joins Gerald Charles CEO Federico Ziviani to discuss the enduring appeal of mechanical watchmaking, the rise of a new generation of collectors and the latest evolution of the Masterlink: the Masterlink Atelier Edition. For Federico, that desire for something lasting, personal and individual sits at the heart of Gerald Charles. He recalls relaunching the brand in 2019 with a team of just three people, even selling watches from his own collection to help fund the project, before growing Gerald Charles into the company it is today. That philosophy comes into sharp focus with the new Masterlink Atelier Edition. Its dial is made from maillechort, or nickel silver, and individually hammered by hand to create an irregular pattern inspired by the roots of a tree. Every strike must be carefully controlled, producing a texture that shifts between waves, roots and almost Impressionistic brushstrokes as the light changes. Three executions are offered in golden rose, rhodium and golden yellow. Each is housed in the distinctive 38mm Masterlink steel case, measuring just 7.99mm thick, and powered by the ultra-thin automatic GCA1000 calibre with an offset micro-rotor and 50 hours of power reserve. Wei and Federico also discuss comfort, individuality, the relationship younger collectors have with traditional watches and the decisions that have helped Gerald Charles grow from a three-person operation into a global independent brand. A conversation about craft, permanence and why something made slowly by hand can feel especially meaningful in a world moving faster than ever.
