Armin Strom Combines Resonance with a Minute Repeater

Double major features.

Best known for its distinctive resonance system, independent watchmaker Armin Strom has also ventured into more traditional high complications, among them the minute repeater. A few years ago, the brand worked with Le Cercle des Horlogers to fit a chiming module to its resonance movement. It now introduces an entirely new repeater developed in house and endowed with several unusual features.

Demonstration mode

What sets the new Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition apart is its unusually visual approach on the dial side, where both physical and acoustic elements are on full display. At six o’clock sits the brand’s signature double balance, coupled by a spring to induce resonance. At 12 o’clock, four hammers are arranged in plain view, ready to strike and remind the wearer that this is no ordinary timepiece, but a minute repeater, often regarded as one of the most complex complications in watchmaking.

This is not just any repeater. The highlight can be broken down into two parts. First, it features four gongs and hammers instead of the usual two. With these additional sets of sounding equipment, each can be tuned differently and struck in a more complex sequence, producing the so-called Westminster chime, which uses four notes for the quarters instead of two.

Armin Strom also appears to be targeting collectors who appreciate minute repeaters capable of delivering the maximum number of audible strikes. Setting the time to 12:59 triggers 12 hourly strikes, three quarter-hour notes, and 14 minute strikes, forming the fullest chime sequence possible on a minute repeater. Rather than requiring the wearer to manually set the time to 12:59 and then reset it afterwards, the brand has developed a system that toggles between a standard chiming mode and a dedicated demonstration mode that automatically plays the 12:59 sequence. The mode selector is positioned at 9 o’clock on the case and also doubles as the repeater’s winding mechanism.

Physical resonance

While the resonance system of Armin Strom is now well known, it is worth revisiting here for its ingenuity. For much of watchmaking history, resonance in timepieces has been achieved through indirect coupling, for example via the baseplate on which two independent balances are mounted, allowing their vibrations to influence one another over time.

Armin Strom, alongside a small number of independent watchmakers such as Vianney Halter and Haldimann, is among those exploring direct mechanical coupling between two balances. What sets Armin Strom apart is its use of a flexible spring link between the balances, which bends and absorbs differences between them, helping them gradually synchronise.

To this day, it remains one of the most efficient systems for restoring synchronisation when external disturbances, such as shocks, temporarily throw the balances out of alignment.

Titanium and salmon

Underneath the impressive mechanics of the new Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition lies, at its core, a beautifully designed and visually striking watch. It pairs a modern, understated aesthetic with a distinctive combination of materials and colours, notably a lightweight grey titanium case and an elegant salmon dial.

Finishing across the watch, particularly on the dial side where the key components are exposed, is executed to a high standard. The four hammers of the minute repeater are a standout detail, not only mirror polished but also hand bevelled. The remainder of the watch is finished cleanly and precisely, resulting in a piece that offers plenty to take in at a glance.
