The Revolutionary List – 26 Inspirational Leaders: Karl-Friedrich Scheufele
This year, Revolution turns 20. Two decades of chronicling watches, people and ideas have given us a front-row seat to a remarkable story: how an age-old craft has both preserved its soul and reinvented itself for the 21st century. To celebrate, we’ve chosen over 100 names and milestones that, for us, define the era so far. From leaders to watches, you can see the whole list here.
I often joke that if Karl-Friedrich Scheufele didn’t exist, the watch industry would have had to invent him. Because he brings class to our culture in the best way possible. Who else would be driving a 100-year-old Bentley 3/4.5-liter in the Mille Miglia, an event he sponsors? Or hosting events at a vineyard that he and his wife, Christine, have turned biodynamic? Or restoring a hotel on Place Vendôme by intentionally removing a floor because it was the elegant thing to do?
Yet beneath all this ineffable style and nonchalant elegance is one of the hardest and most relentlessly driven individuals in our industry who has always intentionally taken the least traveled route possible, because he knows that is the only way to get the best results. It is, therefore, with the greatest pleasure that I’ve seen Chopard L.U.C, his vision for real, authentic in-house watchmaking and neoclassical design, become embraced almost a full 30 years later by the youngest generation of watch collectors.
All that time, Scheufele has continued to create at the very highest level and with the greatest integrity; his personal code would not allow him to do anything else. In the process, he has created some true marvels and even won the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève Aiguille d’Or back-to-back (in 2016 and 2017) for the two brands he helms: Ferdinand Berthoud, which here vived 10 years ago, and, of course, Chopard. He has also raised great children who are now part of the brand. I am truly pleased to call him my friend.
