As Formula 1 marks its 75th anniversary in 2024, a historic reunion is taking place that connects the sport’s past with its promising future. TAG Heuer returns to Formula 1 as its Official Timekeeper, coinciding with the sport’s new decade-long partnership with luxury conglomerate LVMH.

This homecoming represents a convergence of two entities that have helped define precision engineering and technological innovation in motorsports. TAG Heuer’s relationship with Formula 1 stands as one of motorsport’s most enduring partnerships, dating back to an era when the combination of luxury brands and racing was revolutionary rather than commonplace.

TAG Heuer and motorsports

Heuer’s Formula 1 journey began in 1969 when it became the first luxury brand bold enough to place its logo on a racing car, a decision that would transform sports marketing forever. By 1971, TAG Heuer had deepened its commitment to the sport by becoming the first luxury brand to sponsor a team outright.

The partnership’s evolution mirrors the technical advancement of Formula 1 itself. When Ferrari needed a precision timing system for their Fiorano test track in 1971, they turned to Heuer, as the company was then known. This technical collaboration set the stage for future partnerships, most notably with McLaren — a relationship that would span three decades and witness the triumphs of legendary drivers like Ayrton Senna, Mika Häkkinen, and Lewis Hamilton.

Today, Formula 1 has evolved from a primarily European-centric racing series into a global cultural phenomenon, boasting 750 million fans worldwide. The 2024 season has already demonstrated the sport’s growing appeal, along with its embrace of social media, streaming platforms, and behind-the-scenes content like “Drive to Survive,” attracting a new generation of fans. The current fanbase is notably younger and more diverse than ever before, with significant growth in female viewership and engagement.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali’s enthusiasm for the partnership highlights the natural alignment between the two brands. He said in a statement, “I am delighted to welcome TAG Heuer as the Official Timekeeper of Formula 1 as they start the next stage of their long history in our sport. With their focus on innovation, accuracy and excellence, they are a natural partner, and I am excited to see how our intertwining heritage can tell new stories for the future as we celebrate our 75th year.”

Meanwhile, TAG Heuer CEO Antoine Pin frames the relationship in terms of the fundamental nature of motorsport itself. “With decades of history in F1 connecting us to the most successful drivers and teams of all time, we are honoured and privileged to be the name connected to the very thing that defines the winner: time,” Pin said in a statement. “As Formula 1 and their exceptional team continue to build on the amazing work that has been done to create one of the greatest properties in sport, we are excited to be part of the journey and create new stories to enrich TAG Heuer.”

The numbers tell a compelling story of success: through various team associations, TAG Heuer has been associated with 230 race victories, 595 podium finishes, and an impressive tally of 11 World Constructors’ Championships and 14 World Drivers’ Championships. Looking ahead, TAG Heuer’s role as Official Timekeeper will extend beyond mere timekeeping duties. The brand plans to enhance the fan experience through trackside branding, Fan Zone activations, and Paddock Club presence. Additionally, new product ranges are in development.
