In all my years with Revolution (which is quite a few), I have never come across a watch that deserves this award more than the URWERK AMC, which sets and regulates a mechanical watch according to a paired atomic clock. It is simultaneously groundbreaking and rooted in tradition. And while that could be said about a number of watches, the URWERK AMC does both to an unprecedented degree. There is zero hyperbole in that statement. There is the Sympathique clock side of things, which links the AMC back to the granddaddy of all horological innovation, 18th-century über-maestro Abraham-Louis Breguet. There is the pairing of the atomic clock and mechanical watch, which catapults the AMC so far beyond the current limits of watchmaking technology that its closest contender can barely be seen with a telescope.
All this is done via a combination of traditional watchmaking techniques — such as the use of eccentric cams and toothed racks to transmit variable data — with the evolved regulator used in the first URWERK EMC watches. The sophistication of the AMC and its ability to reconcile the reading on a mechanical watch with the hyper-precise time measurement of an atomic clock is enough to put the Revolutionary Watch category out of commission for the next decade while the rest of the industry catches up.
One last thing though – the AMC may be an incredibly innovative feat of watchmaking, but is it really revolutionary? In other words, is it going to change the face of horology? The quick answer is that it won’t, in and of itself. Its technology, however, much like Abraham-Louis Breguet’s most famous inventions were meant to achieve, could put an end to the problem of mechanical watchmaking’s inherent lack of precision once and for all.
And there we are, because there is no question about who this category belongs to; the URWERK AMC is the winner to end all winners.
