Perrelet: Colors in Action

Perrelet explores its artistic side with a colorful and abstract limited edition of its Turbine.

Jackson Pollock would be proud of Turbine Splash, Perrelet’s newest creation. The American artist is famous for his pioneering role in the Abstract Expressionist movement of the mid-20th century and his signature style of drip painting, also known as “action painting”. Pollock’s influence goes beyond his technique; he became a symbol of the rebellious spirit of modern art. And that is exactly what Perrelet has achieved with this new expression of its Turbine watch: Splash.

On the occasion of the Windup Watch Fair in Chicago, the company presents this artistic edition limited to 99 pieces. The Turbine Splash takes its name from the splashes of color that characterise its lower dial. Irregular patches of fluorescent green, yellow, purple, fuchsia, light blue and orange stand out against a black background, recalling the Turbine Rainbow of 2022. But while Turbine Rainbow’s sub-sphere consists of small round drops of paint, Turbine Splash recalls Pollock’s spectacular examples of “action painting”, when the artist threw paints onto canvases with impetuous, choreographed gestures to create dynamic, complex and energetic compositions. With its uninhibited use of color, the watch expresses a creativity that is free and playful, daring and original.

Above the polychromatic canvas, the turbine that gives the timepiece its name rotates. As always, the famous device consists of 12 blades rotating around a central axis. When the watch is worn, they are activated with every movement of the wrist. Introduced by Perrelet in 2009 for decorative purposes, the turbine has a complex structure: the blades, made of black anodized aluminum, have five heavy tungsten micropins at the bottom, which are necessary to ensure perfect balance. The assembly of the turbine therefore requires the utmost skill, so that the blades can rotate smoothly each time the gesture provides the energy to activate it.

The dagger-shaped hands coated with white luminescent material ensure excellent legibility, while the red central seconds hand stands out against the turbine background. A further touch of color is provided by the contours of the baton-type hour-markers in the same tones as the lower dial. For this model, Perrelet uses tritium indices (T25) that are encapsulated in borosilicate tubes. Inside is a phosphor layer which, when activated by the tritium electrons, emits an intense and long-lasting glow. The 44 mm diameter case is made of carbon fiber and polycarbonate, ensuring long- lasting durability while giving it a modern look. The design is derived from the 2019 Turbine EVO watch, which represented the transformation of the original model.

The 44 mm diameter case is made of carbon fiber and polycarbonate, ensuring long-lasting durability while giving it a modern look. The design is derived from the 2019 Turbine EVO watch, which represented the transformation of the original model. The flat bezel and case back are made of black PVD-treated steel with a flat finish. The sides of the case are decorated with the usual vertical slots, while the striated crown allows for better handling.

The Turbine Splash is powered by the automatic caliber Perrelet P-331-MH, with COSC and Chronofiable certifications. It offers a power reserve of 42 hours and features artistic finishes of the highest quality.
