Introducing the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer 2023

With the addition of two striking new Aqua Terra Wordltimers, one a rich, flourishing green, and the other in grade two titanium featuring a laser-ablated dial, Omega has further solidified the reference as a distinct watch of the world.

The ambition which surrounds a finely crafted, luxury timepiece is both broad and specific. From the perspective of the brands and watchmakers, the goal is to craft something distinct and enduring – something that will hold place of pride in its eventual owner’s life. Sure, these things are objects, made to be sold. But they are also made to be enjoyed. They are made to be companions and evoke emotions as they live through important moments in our lives.

In this context, there is something particularly ambitious about Worldtimers. These optimistic watches are built and bought to observe time across time zones, beyond borders, ready to see the sunrise or mark the sunset from any point or place. Simply, they are built to travel the world.

The Low-Down

Since its release in 2017, the Aqua Terra Worldtimer has been curious and distinctive piece in the otherwise understated and broadly utilitarian Aqua Terra collection – watches which are well made and finely finished, built to be easy wearing and versatile. In a cocktail party full of polite and cordial desk divers, the Worldtimer shows up like a jet setter wearing a tux. Presented in a 43mm case, the multidimensional dial bright, bold and busy, reflecting the lifestyle of those who would be so inclined to wear one. For 2023, Omega adds three new pieces to the Aqua Terra family, one of the (slightly) more understated and two of a more eye catching and resplendent variety.

The first is a mostly monotone black/charcoal and grey dial and bezel, presented in grade 2 titanium case with a brushed, black ceramic bezel, framing a multidimensional titanium dial. Befitting the high-tech nature of the metal, an equally futuristic method for crafting the varies details and elements of the dial was employed – laser ablation. Apart from the ruby red lettering of “LONDON” upon the outer ring, every element and color found on this dial was created with the use of lasers, trenching and transforming the dark grey metal into a vibrant representation of the Northern Hemisphere as seen from the North Pole. To further accentuate the tones and textures of the titanium edition, an integrated rubber strap with woven pattern is affixed by way of a decorative titanium end link.

As though one addition, fashioned in futuristic relief, wasn’t enough to get people’s attention, a second example accompanies the titanium. This addition, (emphasizing the ‘Terra’ in ‘Aqua Terra’) is presented in stainless steel and features a brushed ceramic bezel and dial in a deep, verdant green. The sun brushed PVD dial, featuring a textured gold representation of the earth from the same perspective, is encircled by applied accents and indices of 18k Moonshine Gold, further framed by the golden lettered cities of the world. As with the first, “LONDON” is presented in red, signifying Greenwich Mean Time, or UDT (Universal Time Coordinate). The green variants are available on either stainless steel bracelet or on a matching green rubber strap with decorative steel end link.

Within both timepieces and prominently displayed through an exhibition caseback ticks away the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8938. Having been subjected to the highest scrutiny of the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, the cal. 8938 has been METAS certified, ensuring that the watch will be highly accurate and reliable. That is, of course, assuming that one remembers in which time zone and corner of the world one find’s oneself and that they have adjusted their Worldtimer accordingly.

IMHO

Watches are also inherently optimistic things; time will march on, come what may, and we will march along with it. In time’s unrelenting passing life takes its course, with trials and tribulations interspersed with victories and delights. All the while, the timepiece carries out its intended purpose – marking the minutes and hours of our lives for the pleasure and utility of its owner.

A watch such as the Omega Aqua Terra Worldtimer is, both functionally and visually, a highly distinctive timepiece. It’s a watch that can be, for some, difficult to aesthetically connect to. While inevitably there are people who simply like more minimalist aesthetics, the Aqua Terra Worldtimer’s bold looks exist as a function of its function. That is to say, one is less likely to be inclined towards a worldtimer if they are not specifically in need of a world timer.

It is also an exceptionally optimistic timepiece. It is not a watch intended to stay put, living out each day as routinely as the last – a nine to five along the same route, sunrise to sunset. There is an intrinsic, essential hope to a Worldtimer. It is a watch of the world, meant to tell time in ever changing locales – exotic and beautiful places yet unseen, far-flung cities with yet-known people, all waiting to be visited, all enumerated upon the wrist.
